I knew someone would pick up on that - I mean he would have very small debt compared to your average 27 year old with a house. He's almost 25 now...

I must point out it is short term at this stage, and I do have a very clear plan.

Hope the Mrs deals with it though, took awhile to get her blessing, and having her sister move in helps with loneliness.

Anyway we want kids in approx 2yrs and in this day and age it is very hard for a gen Yer on average income to live in middle class or higher on one income so just gotta do what you need to do.

Wish me luck!!

i'm currently in adelaide on a contract, where doing work for a mining company, but once this is up i'll be back to fifo. A lot of people think your away from your family and work these long hours. truth to the matter after constantly working 12hr shift they don't feel any different to a 8hr shift. I actually spend more time with my family now then I ever did when working 38hrs a week. And most of all the money that $100,000 i mentioned was a trades assistant they would be lucky to earn 30-40,000 here in adelaide. I bet you that 2 year plan turns into a lot more years or you'll be back home in 6 months. I've heard it heaps of times i'm only here for so many years but once they start they never want to go back to a monday to friday job.

maybe you should search the net, there's one company looking for 3,000 employees in the next couple of months ranging from trades to drives to trade assistants. And don't worry about advertised positions ring the contract companies and keep ringing until they offer you a job.

I often laugh when i hear the amounts people say you can earn in the mines. Been there, although about 10years ago. The money is good but when you work out you are doing 70-80hrs a week, then not getting paid on your time off it isnt as great as it seems. Also from my experience there was a lot of work getting subcontracted out to smaller companies so unless you were working for BHP or SANTOS or another major company you usually ended up getting shafted. Just my thoughts, it may have changed or i was in the wrong places

your not paying for any of that while you are away. Except the alcohol but most places now only allow to buy 4 a day and they are usually cheap. very easy to save 6 figures a year.

I say good on you guys for doing this work but i am trying to be realistic because i have heard all this many times before.
You would have to be earning atleast $150,000 a year and save every cent after tax to save 6 figures. To say you could easily save 6 figures is something i dont believe. Everyone has insurances to pay, phone bills, utilities, rent, vehicle expenses, food, holidays etc when you are on your time off.
Will be good to hear an update in 3months or so to see if it turned out how you had planned. Once again im not having a go at you guys, i admire your plans but im just trying to give another perspective.

i've been doing it for more then 10 years, my plan was to be there 2 years 3 max. Why am I still there? the money the time off I basically can retire by the time i'm 40. It's like anything in life you do it because of a purpose. Yes you have people that go away and earn big $$ and piss it up against the wall and do it forever. If your actually smart about it it is very easy to save 6 figure a year. Like I said you can earn 100,000 a year with no experience in WA at the moment, which is a job that is luckily to pay 40,000 in adelaide. Like me I wouldn't go to WA at the moment for under 175,000 a year. The thing people don't realise is you don't look a jobs advertised, you ring companies asking for work and keep on them ring them once a week and you'll find withing a couple months you'll be earning 6 figures easily doing stuff all work.
