Essendon 2013

Talk on the national game

Every club has band wagoners Jim. How are Essendon propping up other clubs?

Been awhile since the swans have had 1 or 2 lean years.

If we have 58,000 members now while not going great id love to see how many we can get if we start being competitive, perhaps 80,000 like Collingwood.
Not just Essendon propping up clubs but all the clubs who get big attendances, there are plenty of clubs getting hand outs each year. Who do you think is footing the bill for Paul Roos? certaintly not Melbourne.
Demetriou stated today that the AFL will cop a huge hit to its bottom line by Collingwood and Richmond being eliminated last week. By Port playing Geelong instead of Collingwood v Geelong the AFL could lose potentially up to $1m at the gates alone.

Guess the 1.25 billion tv/media deal might help also. The AFL has done ok with Essendon and Richmond hardly having an involvement in the last decade come finals, I'm sure they will manage.

Yeah but several clubs are losing millions a year, its not a bottomless pit.
It has always been the way, the rich clubs prop up the poor and that aint changing anytime soon

If there was more equality/fairness in the fixture (eg.Friday night games), there would be less need for richer clubs to "prop up" the not so wealthy ones.

Some clubs wouldnt attract a crowd no matter what day they played.
Didnt Port get 24,000 to a Friday night game against Collingwood a couple of years ago?
Some clubs just have a poor following, dont think it matters who/when they play

Problem with that though is its self-perpetuating situation.

If clubs miss out on Friday night games, they miss out on exposure and ability to maximise sponsorship.

Meanwhile the status quo continues, and the gap between the richer and poorer continues to grow.

Essendon has issued writs (code for suing) against Carlton CEO for calling the Bombers cheats. Hilarious really.

Clubs like Melbourne, Bulldogs, North, Port, GWS and the Gold Coast should be getting the Friday night games and public holidays.

So are you saying Essendon should just shrug off an incorrect claim such as this. Only asking...

Incorrect claim? Deluded much. The sooner you accept all this, the much happier you will be. Copped some big penalties for doing "nothing wrong".

Well, lets see how it works out. If it is proven that we cheated I will cop it sweet, until then I'm accepting nothing.

Obviously Andy D sees it that way, on the charge sheet he read out it said Essendon was not guilty of cheating and are not cheats. The club is guilty of poor governence and nothing else at this stage. The ASADA report may reveal otherwise when its released obviously.
I see the AFL were very keen to get on the front foot and release a statement to their media partners outlining this aswell.

We have to pay for our fines someway, still a few media people who will be receiving their writs soon aswell.
I think if Swann and Carlton apologise it wont go any further.
Bulldogs President Peter Gordon cracked me up when he said its a case of the pot calling the kettle black, Carlton calling someone else a cheat

Goodwin would be my choice but I think the board will take someone from outside of the club.
Laidley has an interview today, I wouldnt be surprised to see him or Harvey get the job

not stirring, but it would be hard job to take... Yeah you've got a great list, but after 12 months you're gone.... Would top 4 finish secure your job for the following year or what about a flag (unlikely to win one)??? It would be hard to pass back to hird if next year is successful, surely!

Dont think we are in a position to win a flag but whoever takes on the job must take it on knowing that its a 1 year job regardless of where we finish.
Has been done before Allan Joyce took over the Hawks for 1 year whilst Jeans was ill and he won a flag and stepped aside. Harvey has categorically stated he never wants to be a head coach ever again so he might be an option.
