Deeply disappointed. A big fan of Cascade Premium but no much of a fan of having the p*ss taken out of me by try hard execs who think spinning polite bullsh*t will woo the masses.
If you;re looking for a 'premium' beer that is much closer to home it is hard to go past that old fave of Southwark Premium.

Little Creatures? If so, then a fine drop. Pale ale, bright ale or pilsener.

Hey, I got me a reply too. Included below in all its glory without further comment, except to wonder how many other people got the exact same email.

I'm sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the recent changes to
Cascade. We respect your opinion and appreciate the feedback. I'd like
to take the opportunity to provide you with some background to the
decisions we have made recently relating to Cascade.

There has been a dramatic growth of imported beers in Australia in
recent years and in this increasingly competitive environment, beers
like Cascade need to bat above their weight to succeed.

I can assure you that at the Cascade Brewery we don't make changes
lightly. We are Australia's oldest continually operating brewery and we
respect our heritage and the loyalty of our customers. While we might
revel in our unique past, it doesn't mean we can afford to sit still
while the world of beer becomes a more competitive place, proliferated
by imports. And, like it or not, that means Cascade has to evolve to
survive.

We did some extensive research among premium beer and Cascade drinkers
and they told us that while Cascade is a great tasting, high quality
beer, it was looking old, tired, too conservative and didn't stack up
against the other beers they were drinking. They told us that these
days, they were less likely to choose a Cascade when there was so many
other premium imported beers to choose from. So we faced a choice: fade
out or fight back.

The Cascade family of beers has just received its biggest financial
investment to date - think of it as a fighting fund. The changes this
investment affords are not restricted to a new size bottle. Cascade will
see a whole range of activities from the new packaging, that you're
aware of, to new products, new communications and promotions, all of
which are key to its success. Contrary to some arguments, we are not
pocketing any savings - rather we are reinvesting everything in Cascade
and its future.

We believe Cascade still offers great value. On any given day is it
several dollars cheaper than the imported premium beers and we would
argue it is a superior brew.

It is critical to the future success of the Cascade Brewing Company that
its beers are enjoyed for many years to come. And that success is
essentially linked to Cascade's ability to grow and meet imported beers
head on.

We sincerely appreciate your note. While we may not have won you back to
Cascade, we hope you now have an insight to our motivations for change.

Regards,

Ben Summons.

As someone who has to write a lot of similar letters in my line of work -- We've made this decision, you've written to us to say how unhappy you are, and I'm writing back knowing that are you still likely to unhappy, or even more angry -- he does a solid job of trying to answer while completely ignorning the fundamental question.

Why are you charging me the same amount for less??

I'm sure you would have actually copped an answer that said - 'we've got lots of feedback blah blah blah and we agree that we should be charging 5pct less for our 5pct smaller drink and will henceforth do that.

I reckon if you got that reply, you would have been happy. But I suspect they hoping 98 pct of people either don't notice or are so rusted on to their choice of beer, they won't change and won't complain.

I got the same reply quoted here. He did add that the Cascade Light was staying at 375 mls.

Have to disagree with you there. Cascade pale ale (distinct from the premium lager) is possibly the most underrated beer in the country. Head and shoulders in front of any other "swilling" beer in the land. Presumably since this isn't a "premium" beer it will remain in the 375 ml bottles. Fingers crossed...

I'm very happy to be in the minority here, but I actually liked Southwark Pale over Cascade Pale.

Coopers Pale 1st
Southwark Pale 2nd
Cascade 3rd

Our local had Southwark on tap and we forcefully got used to it over Coopers, but when we tried Cascade we preferred Southwark. Dunno if they still make it. The local has moved to Coopers and we're not overly disappointed.

I have had Southwark Pale and enjoyed it too. They even had it on tap at a place in Smith Street here in Melbourne a few years ago! I had a few(!) schooners of it at the Eagles Club when I came over in April. VERY easy to drink - it has an interesting texture; extremely soft.

I actually think Smith Street (Collingwood?) was the first place I tasted it too, in 2000 or 2001. And I tried it because it was 1, Pale, 2, South Aussie (at least in origin). Melbourne was getting flooded with Tooheys at that point and it was nice to be able to get a Pale of any sort. Some pub in Richmond used to have Pales (Coopers) so I ventured out there quite often to have a few on a Sat arvo.

Dunno mate, I can't recall which pub it was.

I used to live just off of Brunswick St, and I frequented heaps of pubs on that street, and I can't recall any of their names either.
