I feel SORRY for those Aborigine kids who were seperated from thier familys.
Over a half a century if indigNATION of the 20th century occurred.

Circa NOW 2007
We are invaded by another country
Thier ideologies of family life are different to ours
Within a time span they take away kids from thier parents .....
I cant imagine how I would feel losing a kid/kids under those circumstances.

Lets hope todays indy peoples can appropriately say THANK YOU to RUDDS mob for

Todays topic is saying SORRY for Aborigine children that were seperated from thier families.
Those seperations from about 1910 to about 1970 is what I feel SORRY for.

Have to say I agree with you RAB, thought Mr Rudd both spoke well and captured the emotion and magnitude of the occasion and the task ahead of us all.

I must also admit, that despite my political persuasions, I have a lot of time for Kevin Rudd.

Proof of the pudding is in the tasting I guess, so here's hoping each and every one of us can work together to help heal the pain, and take relations in this country to a previously unseen level.

On Brisbane TV, national nine news ran a phone poll about whether people agree with the apology. Only 24% supported the apology! Before I get up on the soapbox with a 'typical bloody Queenslanders' rant I would like to know if a similar poll was run on SA TV last night and what the results were.

Psyber, the front page of today's Australian has a story which makes it clear that today's apology has no bearing whatsoever on any compensation case.

can anyone tell me what practical solutions this apology will offer the aboriginal population? will it help them get off the grog/glue/petrol? will it increase their life expectancy? will it stop the abuse of children in remote areas (and in rural and city areas)?
im sorry kids were taken away from their families, even if some of them were better off with the families they ended up with (not all, not most, SOME) but i would prefer to spend my time and effort helping the people get on track and become respected, contributing members of australian society.

The war cabinet proposed by Kevin Rudd as a joint venture between the opposition and government is intended to make a significant change in this area, whereas in the past I'd imagine, lip-service is perhaps all that has been paid toward social issues.

The apology, all going well, will help the government to correct those problems you talk about Crushy.
The Aboriginal community can now take steps to put their trust issues in 'white fella' behind them and accept the support that is offered to them.
Whether or not this happens, I don't know. But at least it's a step forward.

I thought the speech by the Prime Minister was amazing, the way he portrayed the apology was extremely well done................I think the government has done the right thing.....now lets hope many of the issues facing the indigenious communities can be addressed in a positive way and we as a nation can move forward for the benefit of all aussies regardless of race.....

Howard was one of the greatest politcal opportunists that this country has ever seen (maybe alongside Billy Hughes) and a master of wedge politics. After Hanson stuck her hand up in 1996 Howard sniffed the change in the air and figured there was more votes in exploiting the divide (eg: calling those against him the cultural elite, chattering class etc) when it came to issue of race/racism in this country. He figured those that disagreed with him wouldn't vote for him anyway and he'd keep more swinging voters on side. The theory served him well for 11 years.
Didn't see him on TV in the house today alongside other former PMs Whitlam,Fraser, Hawke and Keating. He must have had a previous engagement
