Ramblers have asked Mitcham council to repair our pitch at Hawthorndene - particularly to relay the concrete so we don't have the crack and there isn't 6 inches of sand built up around the pitch. In response the council have come back super keen (maybe becuse we mentioned OH&S??) and would even like to put down permanent matting. Does anyone have any positive/negative views on permanent mattings from experience?

Biggest concern for me is the first couple of games of the season are traditionally wet at Hawthorndene.

I am not a fan of permanent mattings i think they have too much of an impact on the start times in the early games. Plympton's is a shocker. Although, it would be nice not to have to put it out and pick it up each week 8) .

Cheaper to get someone to make a trolley to carry the mats.

Stick down sucks.

They said at the AGM that he wasn't too well. He was unable to be there to collect his appreciation gift and certificate from the ACB for 50 years or more volunteer work to community cricket. That is a great effort for anyone to give that much time to any organisation =D> =D> .

We are very lucky that there are people like Ron that have made a competition like the ASCA what it is today and allows us to play the game we all enjoy so much.

Odd.I thought Silson was a South Park born and bred and his standing at the club so high because he has stuck with them for so long in the middle divisions.
Good on him for testing himself though, wonder how well he would have done several years ago.

As soon they put sand on it for football season, its stuffed, cant get all the sand out and ends up being like sandpaper.

I remember the stick down mats at the Graduates ground in the North Parklands. It's the only time I ever wore a helmet in 200 games of cricket. Hate the 5hit......

Is that the ground near the aquatic centre that had cracks in it big enough for the ball to fit into?

Nah, I think that particular ground was used by Rose Park I think it was and a long time ago too. I remember seeing Champ make a pretty large score at that ground. The Graduates ground is right next to the zoo. I used to always think we'd lose some of our players every we time we played there. 5hit! It's the Zookeeper! ha ha.

Looks like we will be getting the permanent matting, but won't be covered with sand in winter. Will have its own cover that can be left down while footy etc is played. Sahould be no problems except making sure it's dry for first game. Hopefully will have lots of bounce and sideways movement....

Heard Sheidows two opening bats both have broken arms too. Not handy when one is also keeper and the other a spinner.

So the cover will be covered in sand? Have fun getting that off without ripping the cover....

The problem with stuckdown is the bounce you get, steep bounce.I dont like them. The sand kills the ball and the first few games of the year are under threat from any rain.As wyc said though,no need to drag the stuff out each week.

Jeez it's not that hard putting the matting out (especially if you are skipper ha ha). Better that than getting your scone knocked off.

We have stuck down on our second ground that doesnt get covered over the winter and after the first year its a dead track, the pile on the mat has squashed down and it keeps low, no bounce at all.

I can remember when Blackwood High had it's concrete pitch relaid and the matting was stuck down. The pile of the mat was quite high and would get quite a bit of bounce on it. Not sure what they used to use as a cover during footy season though, but each summer it was ok, not much sand on it.

Main problem we found was that if it had rained or the sprinklers went on the night before, the moisture would hold in it and the ball would zip off the deck.

Not sure what the surface is like now, those that played in Section 5 or 6 (wherever Blackwood played last season) might be able to say, but from what I saw one day, you could still get quite a bit of decent bounce off the pitch if you put your back into it.

I here Blackwood has been kicked out of the association due to the fact that they never turned up to any of the meetings, the final straw being the AGM
