If enthusiasm counts for anything, the Gumeracha Football Club is already well on the way towards producing an improved performance over the 2009 Hills League Country Division season. The northern Magpies appear well advanced in planning to resurrect their fortunes through the appointment of David Thompson as A-grade coach. The 34-year-old will have a solid background of playing experience to assist in his quest to lift the Magpies from the lower end of the division's rankings.
Thompson played in SANFL ranks at Under 17, Under 19 and Reserves level for Central District, before enjoying a successful stint in SA country football circles, including the former Laura-Wirrabara club, Ardrossan, and Spencer Gulf League club Solomontown, where as a key forward, he kicked a century of goals in 2005. In 2006, Thompson played in Amateur League ranks for Central United, which claimed an undefeated premiership. An applicant for Gumeracha's coaching role last season, Thompson who was ultimately pipped for the job by short-term appointee Brett Kent, opted to spend 2008 acting in an assistant coaching position at Central United. Now, belatedly gaining the nod at Gumeracha, Thompson is keenly facing
his maiden venture as an A-grade coach.
