Catastrophe in Adelaide?

Today it is one year since Hurricane Katrina. We have just had Cyclone Larry in Qld. Soon we will have anniversaries of terrorist incidents such as the Bali Bombings and the 9/11 attack.

In SA, yesterday it was 50 years since the 1956 flooding of the River Murray. Its been over 50 years since the last major earthquake in Adelaide. We have a coronial inquest underway into the Eyre Peninsula Bushfires. The Gawler River and 4th Creek (Waterfall Gully) flooded in November last year. Climate Change is already leading to rising sea levels and if Greenland glaciers melt sea levels will rise up to 9 metres worldwide. Even at known present rates, sea levels are expected to rise 49cm in the next 100 years.

In South Australia there are a number of potentially catastrophic disasters we face. The hazard types I have named are officially identified as hazards to South Australia.

Which one worries you the most and why?
Which one do you you think is most likely to happen?
How prepared are you and your family if it does happen?
Is there any other potential catastrophe that worries you even more?

I'll help you out Squeak:-

1. Coming from the Shaky Isles and a particularly shaky (and windy) part of those isles, I voted for earthquake. They still terrify me even after being in Adelaide for a long time. The noise is something that you never forget. I like the fact that the ground does not move here every couple of weeks or so.

2. Second answer is that it has as much chance of happening as anything else on your list I guess. The thing most likely would be a bushfire as it has happened before to the people who live in the hills.

3. I know what to do in an earthquake so prepared.

4. I don't think I'd enjoy a tsunami but still think earthquake is the biggest worry for me.

out of those listed above the bushfires scare me the most. My parents house was only about 3kms from the EP fires before the wind changed and blew it inland and mum said that was the most scarious days ever thick black smoke everywhere and nobody knew where it was or what was going on. I had only been back in Adelaide for around a week from xmas holidays and after inital shock horror i checked home and mum said it was about 10-15kms away at about 3pm never gave it another thought as our house is in the last street north and the fire was coming up from the south and my thinking was had a lot of burning to do before it got to us. Although I did keep a close eye on the news reports and the weather.


Now that I live in the inner western suburbs bushfires are down the bottom of my list. Unattended bags on a bus are and no one bats an eyelid. Its the classic case of 'it won't happen to us' and in the most recent example of terroist activity in Adelaide would have to be the NCA bombing in about 94??? to see on a small scale of the chaos it causes. nowdays would times it by 100 and you wouldn't even be close to it.

bushfire is the most proboble threat and i fear we are in for a very long hot summer but im with MK on the earthquake front. i lived in newcastle in 89 when the quake hit and it sounded like it was the end of the world. truelly frightening stuff.

The Newcastle Earthquake forced a change in the Australian Building Regulations so as long as your house was built after 1989/1990 you should have less fear of your house falling down on you
