This is where you can calculate the sunrise and sunset times for anywhere.

There's even a civil/nautical/astronomical twilight times as well.

So, under your plan, when it's still blistering hot at 11pm (instead of midnight) how much cooler is it at midnight? Does that 1 hour make all the difference?

If there wasn't daylight saving it would still light (and hot) at 8pm!

I'm with smac & quichey & co ... love DLS but it could have finished earlier

It doesn't make ALL the difference but it does make some difference, throw into the equation time is about 90 minutes out from where it should be in summer and that difference can be quite a bit.
90 minutes can sometimes mean 5 degrees, admittedly it can also mean .5 degrees but Im sure on an average it'd work out better for those trying to get to sleep before midnight who dont have air con.
Im lucky in that I have decent air conditioning but I know all too well 1 degree can make a hell of a lot of difference when trying to sleep and if you miss your sleep cycle it can cost you up to 2 hours of sleep.

Economically and logically it would actually make sense to turn the clocks back in the other direction during the summer. That would never happen though.

How Wedgie? Doing this would mean sun rising at 4am in the middle of summer if not earlier, and that would upset sleep cycles more than anything.

Yep, the further you are from the equator the longer you summer day light is and the shorter your winter light is - it reaches maximum difference at the poles.
JAS would know! She's nearer one of the geographic poles than any of us in Oz.

Thank Psyber - meaning it would be less of an issue for Queenslanders than South Australians.

i couldnt have said it better wedgie. an hour at night when its hot can be at least 5 degrees cooler. just could never stand daylight savings whilst i was in adelaide. i would rather be sitting in my house at 8 oclock and it starts getting dark insteand of 9 oclock mid january and its still daylight outside.

Re: Daylight Saving

The debate is going nuts over here in Perth. Having grown up with daylight saving in Adelaide, I was brainwashed to see it as "normal" and believed the propaganda they were all whacky and backward over here. After a couple of years of living here without it, I figured I'd take advantage of the morning sun, get up early and go for runs etc, then I realised I was actually feeling more alive by getting up when the sun was already in the sky and I wasn't meant to be tired and grumpy 365 days a year. What? I'm meant to feel alive in summer.. this is great!

Then the **** introduced a 3 year trial ahead of a referendum on it and it pissed me off. I'm actually surprised how dead against it I am after growing up with it.

I can see how it would suit the 9-5 people but there's some ridiculous arguments for it:

"I cant see the kids without daylight saving".. what? Is it too dark? Switch on a light. I doubt that people work longer hours when there's no daylight saving. I've heard some tradies say they actually end up working longer hours with it.

"Business will go broke with a 3 hour time difference with the east". News flash: the earth is round, of course our sunrise and sunset is going to be different. Get up earlier or call first thing in the morning if you want to do business.

"You can go to the beach after work". Over here that damn Freo doctor comes in in the arvo and it's like being sandblasted. Beach time is in the morning here. Even without that, what if you live on the opposite side of the city to the beach? Yeah right, go through peak hour traffic, get the kids, then head back.

I've had to stay quiet on it because people who are for it say "oh dont worry your curtains wont fade and the cows wont get confused". Not ONE person who doesn't like it thinks the curtains will fade, it's just an idiotic myth spread around to make people who are anti look stupid. There's very few valid arguments for it, only abuse if you're against it. If you're against it your "a moron", "frightened of change", "an old fart who should let the young people have a say", "a conservative", "have no life" etc... yeah that's convincing me to vote yes.

Another one I was told "oh you're just scared of change". Well **** me, I packed up my life and moved over here. That's a change.

Daylight saving is a con job. You cant "save daylight", there isnt suddenly a 25 hour day. If you have more time, then you're probably sacrificing sleep. I know I feel more tired getting up when its still night time.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

In summer, the hottest part of the day ends around 5-6pm then it's a steady decline usually until 6am.

Happy to be proven wrong but you wouldn't normally get a 5 degree drop in one hour unless there's a cool change happenning

Unfortunately in summer, a scorcher is a scorcher and it's usually followed by a hot night .. that lasts all night. Notice that the minimum temp is always around 6am? It's not the direct sunlight causing the heat at the end of the day it's the residual temperature in the air. Having said all that, those days and nights are the exception why should we interfere with the majority who enjoy the extra hour of daylight just so we get an 8pm sunset for the 10% of summer days when it's a scorcher?

I bet you wouldn't notice the difference at all if it got dark at 8pm instead of 9pm. I think the truth is that you are just anti-daylight saving full stop. Which is fine it's your opinion.

It's true that the ambient temperature of the air doesn't drop majorly, but for many people it's a lot more pleasant when there's no direct sunlight happening. Each to their own, I'd rather get out at night.

I agree with this post and all your other previous posts on this topic hondo. I think DLS is great, but felt that it ran maybe a week or two too long this year. I am for starting it when it did last year (early October IIRC?) and ending mid-March.
