Westies outplayed us after an ordinary start. I called it at about the 10 min mark of the second qtr that we were going to lose and I was right!
You deserved the win and as upset I was at the end, something deep inside me made me have a small smile for the REAL west supporters who rocked up in the crap weather instead of sitting at home and watching it on the TV. You haven't won much lately, everyone saying you are destined for the spoon etc etc and to have a win like that is such a great feeling as a REAL supporter. Being there through the thick and thin over the past 10 years at Norwood, I understand your emotion and joy today.
Well done, enjoy it.. we will get u next time!
well said leggies, it was definitely crap weather. EXTREMELY COLD THERE. it flirted with the rain continously. We shall get u next time again though.
Wasnt it good to see Jericho help West get another win (our last win was nearly when he was playing with us) by leaving the ground when he was playing some pretty good footy

I would say that, wouldn't I. I barrack for the Bloods and we all think our own ground is the best, but there's something special about our ground. Built by our own players and officials, it always guarantees a great surface, even in conditions such as this weekend. It's got plenty of room, the best scoreboard in the league, the best BBQ in the league and the most loyal supporters.

It's been a desolate place for Bloods' supporters in recent years. Heartbreak losses have been followed by embarrassing losses. The rare winning positions during a game have been frittered away, lack of skill has constantly turned hope into despair and the rare positives have disappeared as quickly as they originally appeared. Our mini-draft picks turn into regular AFL players, never to be seen again, in weeks. Our fringe AFL players have 'travelling emergency' stamped on their passports and to we hardy West fans, it seems that the umpires are on a crusade to ensure we have the biggest free kick deficiency year after year, which we do.
To the Bloods' supporter, it's a never-ending bashing of our heads into a brick wall. Anything we say is easily refuted by pointing to the ladder. There's no come- back to that, so we bear it. We don't grin, though, but we keep turning up. There's not that many of us, but we keep turning up, hoping that one Saturday, just one, the football gods will smile on us.
Until today, we must have really displeased the football gods. We lost to South, kicking 7.16 and having a hundred more possessions. We drew with he Eagles. Drew, for goodness sake, but were pretty happy about it, actually. Sturt gave us a hiding and then the football gods decided to give Glenelg another goal from a free kick with a minute to go. A deserved free, as were the other 4 goals from free kicks, cried the Bay supporters. We had no comeback, of course, so we took our disappointment home with us.
But we turned up again today.
I took a lot of comfort from our Reserves winning by 11 goals in an almost faultless display. Simon Munn had a lazy 50 possessions, but it was the fact that a West Reserves team had at least 15 players pushing for league selection that pleased me most.
To the league game. Here we go again. The coin is tossed, we lose and before you know it the game was over. 6 goals down at quarter time. Perhaps we'll do better with the wind; nope, soon it's 7 goals (and a bit). We chip away and get within 3 goals, with a set shot from 30 out, straight in front, to make it 2. We're not good at set shots from 20 to 30 out, miss and the Legs soon kick one at the other end.
Half-time and I have this weird feeling I haven't experienced for a long time. It takes a while, but I eventually diagnose it as quiet confidence. We play a great 3rd quarter into a strong wind and kick a goal in 30 seconds of the last to get close. It's a tease again, of course, we send our best running player to hospital and don't score another goal for 20 minutes or so. But strange things are happening. Suddenly Norwood keep kicking points from set shots and we're still in it. 2 goals needed, though and time's running out. Another 'honourable loss'. I've had enough of honourable losses and can't stand another one.
Davenport goals!
Seconds to go, SAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sal, you b.......y beauty, first game back after a knee reco.
We win.
I see more than one West supporter with a tear in the eye. Only West supporters would understand and I empathise.
Me, no tears, but I scream 'YESSSSSSSSS', over and over again.
The West players go over to where our past players were congregated for the day and acknowledge them. Later, I'm lucky enough to join the circle for the singing of the song and I give it all I've got.
Later, on radio, I hear Centrals sing the same song in a very matter of fact way. I sang with gusto, but only half for the win I'd just seen.
The other half came from the belief that we're on the right path to singing the song as a matter of fact.
