4/5 this week, as North Pines made a mockery of my Athelstone tip. I knew they were close to a win, but Bigshow's boys gave them a belting.
The Saints continued on their merry way Saturday but not without a fight from Ovingham on the most uniquely shaped ground in the SAAFL. For those who have never played there, Cane Reserve makes the SCG look long. However it was the visitors making the most of the small ground against the breeze in the first quater, with Ivan Novosel and Travis Smits dangerous around goals it appeared a question of how much were the Saints to win by. With both sides on direct opposite positions on the ladder, Ovingham needed to change things around quickly or risk a blow out. The Cats responded to the challenge in the 2nd quater and with Aaron Cooke and Roger Jurina winning plenty of footy in the midfield, the game became an arm wrestle. The 3rd quater was Ovingham's best as it's defence got on top, Cooke cleaned up at the stoppages and it was quickly becoming 'Nightmare on Churchill Road' for the Saints. It was not be for the prowling Cats as with Jason Mattner leading the Saints defence denied an upset in the last quater. Scott Mumford was the hero of the day kicking 6 goals for the Saints, and Joshua Nicholls made a welcome return from Overseas. Coach Riddler had few other winners on the day, and it was perhaps defining that the Saints song was not heard from their changerooms after the match. St.Pauls OS will need to regroup before facing it's Round 1 conqueror Athelstone who are also coming off a 'Nightmare' performance. Ovingham will no doubt be buoyed by their performance against a Top 5 Club, and with a strong midfield, could be a dangerous proposition on their home deck for any unsuspecting sides.
