Played in 87, 88, 89 A Grade flags and was a bloody good player!!

Umpired a game out at Kenilworth with him last year against Ingle Farm i think, he's not a bad umpire either, doesn't give Plympton any favours either, i reckon he rides us harder!!!

plan to have neutral umpires in the b grade but a past premiership player umpiring an a grade game at home.

While i see where you are trying to go with this, M Goodes is definately not the man to be questioning his credibility when umpiring a match involving his former club.

10+ years of quality umpiring earnes you the respect from the league, and he has it, in spades.

jabber, i'm not looking for a sacrificial lamb or questioning his credibility/respect from the league, it was simply a question based on what i had been told.
my point is that it doesn't seem to make sense when you compare it to the neutral umpire concept that they want to bring in for b and c grade footy.

Yeah but they talk about this neutral umpire in B Grade footy every year, it goes nowhere...

I umpired 2 PFC games last year when i was on the SAAFL, one of those i was umpiring with another former PFC player (although he has been umpiring for about 25 years)

I think PFC lost that game by 5 points.

Generally speaking, from my point of view anyway, i hated umpiring PFC A Grade, too much pressure, and that 5 point game was murder!! But geographically it was the only game i could umpire at the level that i had set for me...

that's why it doesn't make sense. at one level it's ok for it too happen but at a lower level (the b's/c's) where it is harder to find a committed ump for the club rnakes it is being propsed that it needs to be changed to remove the 'bias', perceived or otherwise.

on the other point of communication, no doubt it's good for one side but there must be some instances of the opposition having some doubts when they hear some player/umpire familiarity. i've done umpiring so i'm not guessing about what happens out there.

IMO reserves grade umpires is a problem that is not going to go away, i think its a problem that people/clubs/players are just going to have to deal with, as much as that sounds pretty ordinary. Any motion to make B Grade umps go away and umpire reserves grade match elsewhere will be defeated, there is no question about that, people will not want to umpire under those rules, clubs wont be able to find umpires, clubs will send whoever they can coz they wont care who does it, it isnt thier match who cares!!

Unless the SAAFL are going to throw huge amounts of money toward the umpring dept to recruit and entice them and then pay them well, somehow the money i got i felt wasnt quite up to the job that i was doing, and i'm sure some guys feel the same, what is it sometimes around .50c per insult, why would you bother!!!!

The SAAFL seems to always have its priorities wrong, they've spent shitloads of cash on 60 odd computers for clubs, so whats that 60x $700 roughly $42,000 to help get the scores in the paper on time basically, when they could have thrown that money at the umpiring department, recruited a whole heap of umpires and ran some umpires through the reserves grade competition. Say 1 official umpire and a club umpire from the home or away side, to make it easier to fill all divs, or most divs anyway... This is just thinking on my feet, so there are no doubt flaws in it im sure.
