Played in 87, 88, 89 A Grade flags and was a bloody good player!!
Umpired a game out at Kenilworth with him last year against Ingle Farm i think, he's not a bad umpire either, doesn't give Plympton any favours either, i reckon he rides us harder!!!

plan to have neutral umpires in the b grade but a past premiership player umpiring an a grade game at home.

While i see where you are trying to go with this, M Goodes is definately not the man to be questioning his credibility when umpiring a match involving his former club.
10+ years of quality umpiring earnes you the respect from the league, and he has it, in spades.
Find another sacrificial lamb.

I umpired 2 PFC games last year when i was on the SAAFL, one of those i was umpiring with another former PFC player (although he has been umpiring for about 25 years)
I think PFC lost that game by 5 points.
Generally speaking, from my point of view anyway, i hated umpiring PFC A Grade, too much pressure, and that 5 point game was murder!! But geographically it was the only game i could umpire at the level that i had set for me...

that's why it doesn't make sense. at one level it's ok for it too happen but at a lower level (the b's/c's) where it is harder to find a committed ump for the club rnakes it is being propsed that it needs to be changed to remove the 'bias', perceived or otherwise.
on the other point of communication, no doubt it's good for one side but there must be some instances of the opposition having some doubts when they hear some player/umpire familiarity. i've done umpiring so i'm not guessing about what happens out there.
