It's not a matter of sounding elitist as you put it Mick, but Triple J was set up to provide an alternative to mainstream radio. This was why it was founded and funded initially back in 1975 (as double J) and the grounds on which it continues to be funded. Besides surely there are enough mainstream/commercial FM stations without Triple J adding to the pile.

fair enough, but maybe it suggests that the listeners of 3j just happen to like the mainstream stuff (but are perhaps unwilling to admit publicallyto the fact) unfortunately voting for a a top 100 is a democratic process that doesn't always yield the result one wants or expects. Given the valid reasons for setting up 3j that you very eloquently explained even if something is mainstream i.e. popular, makes money etc. is it any less worthy for inclusion? Don't get me wrong I think the philosophy of promoting non-mainstream bands/performers is desirable, but what happens if the struggling band you listen to in a pub in St Kilda suddenly becomes hugely popular are they then excluded from the top 100? Maybe 3j should not indulge in what is a meaningless exercise a la mainstream radio?

Common though - that's the way it is.
