League 1 & 2 Discussion thread Season 2009 / 2010

Postby johntheclaret » Fri Jul 31, 2009 8:51 am

Whilst I haven't actually checked this out (I don't go on ebay), agents trying to sell league one outfit Tranmere Rovers, have put them up for sale on ebay. The asking price is around £10m

whatever next.

Come to think of it, with Ashley apparently failing miserably in his attempts to off load Newcastle, maybe this isn't such a bad idea. I'll open the bidding £0.50p

Sol Campbell made his debut for Notts Co today, but they lost.

Now out of the top 6, how long before the new moneybags owner starts to lose patience with Sven ?

So Campbell signed for 5 years, made his debut, and then buggered off.....

Magpies confirm Campbell exit

Defender leaves after playing just one game for League Two club

Notts County have confirmed veteran defender Sol Campbell has left the club just weeks after signing a five-year contract.
Campbell joined the ambitious League Two side in late August after deciding to leave Portsmouth over the summer.
He shunned interest from Premier League clubs in order to join the Magpies, who have former England coach Sven Goran Eriksson as their director of football.
However, the 35-year-old has parted ways with Ian McParland's side by mutual consent just days after making his debut for the club, with the decision meaning he cannot sign for another team until January.

No wonder everyone thinks he is a two bit whore.

And the Notts County circus keeps on rolling

League continue County enquiries

Magpies provide Football League with owner details
The Football League are investigating new information from Notts County over the club's ownership.
The League had requested documentation from County relating to their major shareholders following the club's takeover.
The Magpies were bought in the summer by Swiss-based consortium Munto Finance, fronted by executive chairman Peter Trembling.
Sven-Goran Eriksson was named as director of football soon after but the identities of those behind the investors remains unknown.
A Football League spokesman said: "The Football League is now analysing information given to us by Notts County and making further enquiries. No further comment will be made until after the League's next board meeting on October 8."

League rules state that all club directors and significant shareholders must pass a 'fit and proper person' test in order to have the takeover rubber-stamped by the league.

Addicks announce £7m investment

League One club also restructure the board
Charlton Athletic have revealed £7million has been invested in the club by directors, which has also led to a restructuring of the board.
The likes of plc chairman Derek Chappell, club president Sir Maurice Hatter and football club chairman Richard Murray have ploughed money in to the Addicks following the bright start to the new season.
In addition to the investment, Murray now becomes chairman of the plc board, which has taken on full responsibility for the management of the club's affairs.

Serious push for an immediate return.

On that, it seems that there are two types of "big" club in the 3rd tier. Those that go stgraight back up and those that languish there for years. Leicester went straight back up and Charlton will be keen to follow them. This year is a bit of an oddity as there were 3 (percieved) big clubs who took the drop with Norwich and Southampton joining Charlton. I say percieved because all three have been premiership sides in recent years, with Charlton and Soton having lengthy stints in the top flight.

But then there was Nottm Forest and Sheffield Wednesday, who had a similar history, long periods in the toop flight, falling by the way and then struggling to pull back out of the 3rd tier. So what is the fate of the 3 relegated sides this year and for the future. Charlton have got off to a decent start and now announce a £7m investment by the current directors, showing that they are serious about the challenge ahead. norwich are still in some disarray and I don't believe they have fully recovered from the shock of actually going down. A 7 goal mauling at home and the dismissal of thier manager has given them a bit of a task to get up, but it is a long season and they might be there or thereabouts come May next year. As for southampton, they have lost most of thier team (not a bad thing after what happened last year but with 5 draws in thier first seven games and a 10 point deficit to over come, they might be the big one that goes the way of Forest and Wednesday.

that leaves Leeds, probably the biggest of all the "big" clubs that have graced the 3rd tier in recent years. They have learned how difficult it is to break out of league 1. After nearly overhauling amassive points deficit 2 years ago, they had no excuses last year and still failed. This year they look strong again, but they need to keep focussed. Should it be a Leeds and Charlton 1 2, then norwich will be left to tough it out via the play off minefield, should they get that far ?

And just for those who weren't aware, liverpool legend john Barnes is manager at merseyside outfit Tranmere Rovers. things aren't going to well for them at the moment.

Barnes calls for team work

Tranmere boss believes team work is the key for his struggling side
Tranmere manager John Barnes believes only team work will get his struggling side out of their current run of poor form.
Rovers have won only once in eight League One games so far this season, losing their last six matches on the bounce to sit second from bottom in the table. But Barnes, who took over as Tranmere boss in the summer, believes team work will get his side out of their current predicament.

I guess there is another debate. Do great footballers make great managers?

Leeds kept their spot at the top of the table with a 1-0 win at 10 man MK Dons. It took an injury time winner from Robert Snodgrass to give Leeds the 3 points. This guy has had an awesome week. Arguably Leeds best player in their 1-0 loss to Liverpool and now scores the winner early this morning.

I have a video here which shows the Red Card given to the MK Dons player followed by the goal. It's one of the worst challenges i've seen.

Preston have sacked thier manager Alan Irvine. Apparently ex claret manager Steve Cotterill is in the fram as he was a good friend of PNE owner Shaw.

Good luck to them. Cotts is a difficult manager to play for by all accounts and it was obvious the team wasn't playing for him before he got the puch at Burnley. I also doubt that PNE would stand by him whilst they go 19 games without a win.

As for Irvine, how quickly they forget. When he joined PNE they were sat at the bottom of the CCC and odds on for relegation. He saved them and the following year took them to the play off's eventually losing to Burnley's victims Sheffield United.

this year they are sitting comfotably in mid table, but lets be honest, with Leicester coming up from League 1, and Newcastle, WBA and Boro all dropping down from the EPL, it was always going to be a tougher league than last year.

What a disgrace this saga has become. Eriksson, then the Campbell fiasco, then Munto. Talk about bringing the great game into disrepute.

BECKFORD HANDS IN TRANSFER REQUEST

Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford has handed in a transfer request, the League One club have confirmed.

The 26-year-old, whose contract expires in the summer, has been strongly linked with a move away from Elland Road, with Championship leaders Newcastle leading the chase for his signature.

And Leeds have now revealed Beckford informed them of his desire to leave last month, although they insist their star forward will not be allowed to leave on the cheap.

A statement on the club's website read: "Leeds United can confirm that Jermaine Beckford has handed in a transfer request. The transfer request was handed in on December 30. By handing in a transfer request it clearly indicates that the player wants to leave Leeds United."

 Sharp lot up at Leeds. I'd never have worked that out

It's actually quite comical really - bringing the game into disrepute if there has ever been a case!

There's no guarantee that he is leaving in this transfer period. We'd have to get around 4 Million for him to at least consider letting him go.

If he isn't there for the Tottenham game, we'll just promote Snodgrass to the starting line-up. He dominated Liverpool, hit the bar against Man United, so Spurs should be a walk in the park for him ;)

If he doesn't go in January then Leeds won't get a bean for him in the summer as he's out of contract.
£4m is way over the top pidge. £2m is a fairer valuation IMO.

Although they're two pretty solid defensive midfielders, his pace makes him very dangerous.

I agree, 2 Million is fair. Part of the transfer fee would go to his former club ( i think 10%). I'd rather keep him, make sure of promotion and let him go for free in the summer as we'd get a reasonable amount of money for going up. If he stays for the rest of the season, you never know, he may even decide to sign a new contract with us.

Beckford is staying at Leeds at least until the end of the Season. Although he may go for nothing at the end of the season, I am glad he is staying so the club can enhance their chances of promotion. I would much rather get promoted and lose him for nothing at seasons end, than make a few dollars and not be able to replace him with a suitable striker.

Leeds losing 2 - 0 at "mighty" Exeter City might just persuade him Newcastle is a better option.
