I'm intrigued by the responses this got...
We normally swallow our saliva and mucus secretions from our nose and throat every day without noticing, along with any particles adhered to them.
It is only when it builds up faster because of exercise that we become aware of it.
So, what's the big deal?

It's like the fact that every molecule of water on the planet has been through several species' kidneys and bladders by now - even that in your beer...

That's why handkerchiefs and tissues were invented.
With this wonderful invention, you can dispose of such phlegm discreetly without contaminating everyone else's environment with the bacteria you have.
Spitting in public is never acceptable - including on the sports field - as far as I am concerned..

It was actually exposure the Pseudomonas aeroginosa in a contaminated environment - the bacterium that produces green phlegm - that hastened my wife's early death.
It is highly antibiotic resistant and a risk to anyone with already damaged lungs or kidneys because it gets entrenched and causes more damage.
Spreading TB by spitting would be even worse, and it is now back in Australia.

Can someone work out how many days Ricky Ponting has spent in the field, how many balls in those days and that will be the number of times he has spat into his hands....
