I think what makes a good coach has changed over the years.

In my day, some sturdy wheels, good leather seats and plenty of colour usually set my heart alight.

i find it interesting that alot of clubs,not all of them,but alot that appointed coaches this season based more on who they could bring to the club player wise than what they could do in improving the list and juniors they have are struggling.wonder how many of these coaches will be at the same club next year.and if they arent their,how many clubs missed out on long term coaches they have missed out on who were not interested in the money but what they could do for the club,its supporters and the young men under their care.
unfortunately egos and self importance will rule the fact that these committee men will say they did what they did for the better of the club but really were looking for quick results for their own needs

What makes a good coach you ask,

1. A good playing list
2. A coach that can communicate
3. A side that respects the coaching panel
4. A side that agrees to discipline rules

it all starts from there, if you dont have it. you aint going anywhere!

probably my old man as he was a bloody good coach, half his teams hated him (the other half still call him up for beers) but they won a tonne of flags!

one that doesnt yell and scream all the time. Blood and guts style coaching went out with Fos Williams and Neil Kerley - these blokes - and these days a successful coach is one who communicates well at all levels. In the rooms, on the field and in the boardroom.

I agree but disagree
sometimes a spray is whats needed, its important after the coahc ahs let off some steam he has the ability to get straight back onto it (specifing what he wants the next qarter, structures and positions).

Must be respected by players but not necessarily mates. Most sucessful coach I've played under I thought was an arsehole but he was able to get the best out of his playing group. He was a great motivator - we beat better sides cos he made us believe we could.

Quichey, I vowed that I never had a "coach" throughout all my very ordinary footy career. I had a heap of guys in my side who were errr, thugs(?) for sake of a better term. The coach revved them up and they, in their hot-headedness revved the rest of us up.

To be honest, that's not true totally... by the time I had a proper football coach I was well hidden inside bad habits. Ones I couldn't get out of unfortunately.

So, in summary, having a good coach EARLY on in your footballing life is more important. Those that teach you the game, positioning, reading the play, and running to certain positions is most important.

The most recent example of this is Hagan who was the Eels coach (my NRL team). He berated the kiwi guys for their efforts, they sooked and he got hauled over the coals. He finished up resigning, but really would've been sacked if not pushed.

I hate that. IMO guys/kids, as they get older and progress through the grades and the level of competition becomes more serious, should be rightfully criticised (at the right moment of course, it can't be done all the time) instead of just being encouraged in a postive manner. Otherwise they will never learn anything and never improve.
