Knowing Fletch well, he would be over the moon at his name being mentioned on the Forum.
He has been dining out on that game for years. Even when he switched to the Roos. After a few "Handles" at the Broadway Hotel, you could not shut him up.
I heard about every one of those 20 goals every second Sunday afternoon/evening.
His chat up line was even "Have you ever met a guy who kicked 20 goals in a game before?"
Sad thing was, it worked once or twice

Exelby gone from Marion.
Why!!!!!

Winning only 3 games for the year probably had something to do with it...

Can anyone tell me what Exelby's win / loss ratio was like at Ironbank? Did they play finals under him?

Is this a case of exelby not being able to coach....I don't think so,I'd have thought he needs to test him self indifferent waters, get out of the comfort zone, could be a couple of openings around the area in which he resides!

No problem with his coaching.

Recruited well.

Rob Jones quit after 2 games went back to Brighton.
Few games later Tregonning followed him.
That is two on-ballers.

Then we lost our back up ruckman Shard to work commitments... played one game.
Then Wadey went down with injury for majority of year.

Brad Smith, Richie Ray-zwar & Mick Townsend injured after few games out for year.

Then Lynchy our CHB quit (also 3rd ruckman). Came back later in year for 3 games then disappeared again.

Then the big one.. the Bilney brothers walked out.

So we lost huge amounts of talent... 2 ruckman, 5 mid-fielders, 3 key position. Nearly all contracted players.
Injuries were a curse this year, but every club gets that, we just had no depth to cover them.
It's a joke this day and age the way guys float around clubs with zero comittment.
If you commit to a club that is it for the year.

So like I said, no problems with Exelby, but he was pushing sh!t uphill all year.

Need to ask the question though WLF, why did all these recruits quit? If they were enjoying their time at Marion should this have happened? Obviously injuries are part of the game and you blokes were definitey hit pretty hard, but guys walking out on the team has to come back to a culture thing doesn't it?

So if ex was the man for the job, were you able to put your finger on why these players chose to go back to there original clubs, or just simply disappeared for periods of time? There was clearly some excitement in the air around marion at the start of the year, so it seems strange that it became difficult to keep them around. Losing the u18's at short notice couldnt have helped. Bottom line is, either ex failed as a senior coach, or the club did not support him well enough when support was needed.

The question has certainly been asked P32.
Culture is a factor.
Getting paid when we are getting flogged I assume makes guys walk away.
Guilt?
Selfishness?

Like not having a personal go at these lads as I got on really well with the Jones, Tregonnings etc, and it says alot about where we are at when a guy would rather play C grade for Brighton than A grade for Marion.

Since I've been there 2002, the number of faces that have come through is amazing.
Players from 2000 premiership left... 0.

Imagine if we had the Brett 'Chippy' Dale, Harrows, Jimmy 'Pumper', Keels RIP, Ravi, Morgan Billings, Steve Coffee, McEntees, Bilneys, Stokesy Reece Hamilton, Lallards I really could go on.

We would probably be in MV shoes.

These kinds of guys are the reason you are in the position you are recruits that are likely to walk away when the going gets tough. Seems like your club would prefer a quick fix to doing the right thing which has shown this year.

Here's the reality guys from someone who played in the old Glenelg/South League juniors.

Morphy Park = Glengowrie HS
Brighton = Brighton HS
Marion = Seacombe / Dover / Mitchell Park HS
Mitchell Park = Mitchell Park / Marion HS
Plympton = Plympton / Vermont HS
Blackwood = Blackwood / Urrbrae HS

Juniors were played on Sunday's and each club had a few college lads as well.

Most of those schools mentioned are no longer or have nowhere near the students attending them. Blackwood and Brighton have prospered because their supply schools have grown and their immediate areas continue to re-generate youngsters.

Christies dominated the SFL in 1994 presumably nearing the end of an era when Christies Beach HS was teeming with kids.

The reality is that the rationalistaion of schools in the South and outer South and addition of private schools like Woodcroft College has channeled young players to certain clubs rather than what used to happen years ago when there were more schools scattered around the area. I honestly can't see how 3 clubs such as Marion and Morphy Park and Mitchell Park (throw in Plympton as well) can continue to survive in such close proximity, similar demographic and no supply from a large secondary school.

Surely the question has to be asked by their own people, merge or lose their identity altogether.
