The comedy in 1983 was supplied by the SANFL when they declared Antrobus the winner, then realised they still had 20 votes to be counted. Amateur hour at its' best. :)

Not quite correct. The comedy was provided by the Channel Seven director, who burst onto the stage to say that there were 10 rounds still to be counted. What he had failed to realise is that these rounds had coincided with the two state games played that year, and for as long as the Magarey Medal had been around votes were never counted for the games where players were unavailable because of interstate commitments. The SANFL had it completely correct.

ST players who played in 1978

P BAGSHAW...baggy number 8 had the silkiest of skills, elusive, deadset superstar, champion etc etc
R BARTON....rover, did some damage as a goalkicking forward pocket, later played for NW
A BURGAN...great wingman
C CASEY...Unobtrusive reliable defender
S CECE... Silvano creative skillfull player, but did he reach his full potential ?
R DAVIES....superdooper star, quite possibly the best ST player Ive ever seen
M DELAHUNTY....????
J DERRINGTON...skilled rover
C GILES...my recollection of Clint was that he was a tall that played ok ?
M GRAHAM...flash was a sensational winger/half forward and a night owl in the night clubs
P HARGREAVES...tall who was a servicable player
P HEINRICH...went OK
B HOWARD... very talented midfielder
J HUNT ...???
R KLOMP...Mr Reliable, a gun key position player, and played VFL
G LAUDER....more than useful player
G LEONARD...handy player
A LLOYD...dourish defender
R OATEY...ended up at ST late in his career, was more or less Mr Norwood in those times, courageous rover and handball happy
N PETTINGILL...Noel was famous for his long long long, long, long, kicking at NW, didnt play too often at ST ?
P SANDERS...handy player
T SIMS...big Trev, didnt look a footballer, but forged a good career as a ruckman
N WARK...Nigel was another ex redleg, back pocket might have been his best position
K WHELAN..thrilling is the best word I can describe him, his high leaps and marks are folklorish, an amazing full forward
B WINTER...magnificent defender, who played forward later in his career, played for NW later, and coached WWT, was a great marker of a footy
G HARDEMAN...start recruit, injury ravished in 1978
I PFIFFER...handy player this was his debut season
G MUTTON....the name rings a bell, what was his claim to fame, was he a sMALl player with tons of ability ?
A DOWNES....starting off in 1978, ended up being a very good player
D SMITH...serious talent
C ROBERTS ?
R WEATHERALD....cant recall him as a player, but has bred well
G REED...CD recruit, good full forward, used mainly as a defender at ST
G WISEMAN....yes yes yes what a good player
P MILTE ...????
J JOHNSON....????

Coach:Jack Oatey
Captain : Paul Bagshaw

DEBUTANTS

G HARDEMAN
G MUTTON
A DOWNES
D SMITH
C ROBERTS
R WEATHERALD
G REED
G WISEMAN
P MILTE
J JOHNSON

ST lost several players leading into 1978, no surprise to see so many debutants
R OATEY
PETTINGILL
Were these 2 ex redlegs debuting for ST in 1978 as well ?
IF so that would be at least a dozen debutants, most clubs with that many new players would norMALly be struggling

ST were still a very competitive unit in the 70s after blazing thru the mid and late 60s
Jack Oatey, arguably the best SANFL coach of all time revolutionised a style of footy at ST that was simply enthralling to watch
Had I not been dragged along to NW games as a young kid, I could have easily converted to a ST barracker

MY TOP 5
1 DAVIES
2 BAGSHAW
3 GRAHAM
4 WHELAN
5 KLOMP

Silvano Cece - was a champion schoolboy footballer with great pace and skills and kicked a lot of goals as a HF/rover. Seemed destined for a long and successful career but injurted a knee. He was extremely fit and running in a straigh line could match it with anyone in league footy but couldn't twist and turn, so he had to retire and became Sturt's runner.
He played in the 1976 PF but missed selection in the Grand Final. I will always remember bumping into him at the end of the longest queue with his brother waiting to get in. I asked how come he was lining up to buy a ticket and he told me Sturt didn't give him one. I have always considered that rather extraordinary.

Mike Delahunty - defender recruited from Collingwood.

Clinton Giles - found it hard to break into Sturt's team ahead of Davies and Sims, and found a new home at West Torrens where he played a lot of good footy.

Tony Lloyd - I remember him being named in the West Torrens team in round 1 1972, and also being listed in the football budget. Next minute he's a Sturt player. I don't know what transpired and would be interested to find out.

Noel Pettingill - longest kick the game has ever seen. Would have played mayne 20 games for Sturt and then found himself in the SAFA.

Ken Whelan - had the most extraordinary leap off very few steps which made him very difficult to counter. One of the reasons people paid to watch footy in the 70s.

Robbie Weatherald - Tim's uncle, not his father.

Malcolm Greenslade isn't listed at Sturt or Glenelg.
Was he retired by 1978 ?

Won an under age medal IIRC.
Pretty ordinary the club not getting him a ticket too.

Greenslade was still listed at Sturt in 1978 but didn't play a league game. Went to Glenelg in 1979. I know he played SAFA at Edwardstown but I can't recall if it was pre-Glenelg or later.

I played footy and cricket with Silvano at school. Handy off spinner but footy was always his game. I remember one game where he kicked 9 goals, nearly all of them the result of clever evasive skills, breaking clear with his pace and belting it through on the run. This gets said a lot about various players but Cece would have been a superstar in today's style of football.

As a junior there was some anomaly is defining the boundaries (no idea how that worked) and Silvano had the option of playing for either Norwood or Sturt. I know Norwood were keen to snare him, and I tried talking him into playing for the Legs but he decided upon Sturt because ... (get this) ... he didn't think he was good enough to make the Norwood team. He was a modest guy who tended to under-rate himself a bit :)

MALcolm Greenslade played for GL 1979-1981
I checked the 1978 lists and it would appear that he had 1978 off

MALcolm kicked 607 goals in 215 SANFL games
MALcolm kicked 7 goals in 2 games for RI in the VFL

In 1978 it would appear that Ken Whelan was the first choice full forward
Perhaps this may have been a reason why MALcolm Greenslade eventually ended up at GL

Dabrowski, Floreani and Phillipou all had sons who played League footy. Mark Pavlich is the uncle of Matthew who is Steves' son.

I reckon that's Glenelgs' Greg Bennett who played a few matches (not many)
Barry Hank is the son of Bob.
Chris Kellett led the club goalkicking the year before.

Yes that Carlton David Mckay was a sensational mark and player
I reckon this David that played for WT was from the VFL or from Melbourne

David McKay we are talking about here also came from Carlton - from their Reserves I think. Also, McKay was captain of the Reserves premiership side in 1984.

Mal, I have a feeling that both Greenslade and Whelan played for Edwardstown in 1978 but I can't find any sources to support this.

MALcolm Greenslade went to Edwardstown in May 1978, and did not play any games for ST in 1978
Kenny Whelan played 6 games for ST in 1978 and then quit in June and also went to Edwardstown

Question is
Did Edwardstown go top ?
They recruited 1006 SANFL goals !!!!

Its incredible how many players became unavailable or injured for ST this season

QUESTION
Who was the better full forward
MALcolm Or Kenny ?
