A win for common sense and the good of the comp. For the effort put into the proposal or at least it's importance, the "positives" for the wafc were extremely flimsy. We await ruccis response ( after he comes out of mourning). The futility of all those pathetic articles.

I am not sure that we have the right people at the top, here in the SANFL. I have serouis doubts that L Wicker will take the fight up to the AFL and I am VERY doubtful that J Olsen will box on for the SANFL.

After chatting with a commission member and a couple of SANFL club board members, I am 100% confident in Olsen batting for the SANFL. Whicker is another matter altogether, seems to be lacking something, not sure if it is ability or intent though.

We had none last week (1st time since Rd 19 2007). And only one (Salter) this week.

Hypothetical, of course, but offers a layer of perspective roundly overlooked by many in the "state leagues should learn their place for the good of the game" camp. Alongside, of course, the oft-repeated comparisons with the "fortunes" of other "elite" clubs without dedicated reserves sides over the past 20 years. All this in addition to the much overlooked comparisons with the performances of those AFL clubs with dedicated reserves sides, not just in the VF(A)L.

Geelong's reserves continued in the VF(A)L after the 1999 dismantling of the "AFL Reserves". The AFL side went on to average about 8th in those years prior to the year the number 119 became stuff of sweet dreams for some, nightmares for others.

That Geelong's AFL side are doing well now may well enforce the pro "AFL reserves" argument - for now at least. So, why have Collingwood been able to come to the fore so much more rapidly? Answer that question, then the case made by some proponents that dedicated reserves sides are "the reason" looks all the more simplistic.

It didn't even get to the WAFL clubs for a vote, the WAFC rejected it anyway, there's too many disadvantages and disruptions for minimal potential benefits. Sensibility rules the day.

Leigh Whicker, in this morning's paper, has rejected the 'AFL Reserves in the SANFL' idea. Pretty much exactly what most of us would have wanted to hear I'd have thought. Interesting that the senior journalist didn't write the story though, after his claim that the AFL chief was thumping the table over this issue.

A negative article on the AFL reserves potential.
Big surprise it's not written by Rucci. Even mentions Fitzpatrick from the AFL isn't convinced it's the best idea.
