They were from Karoonda.

Ambrose was headmaster at Balaklava High in the eighties, maybe even in the late seventies. Was a good bloke...unlike his deputy headmaster

ADELAIDE OVAL
A move to debar the SANFL from putting its case for a lease of Adelaide Oval b4 an Adelaide City Council special committee was defeated by 10 votes to 7 at yesterdays full council meeting
Moving that a league deputation should not be received, Alderman J.C.Irwin said
"" It is unthinkable that we should interfere with SACA occupancy of the Adelaide Oval, which it is held with considerable distinction for more than 90 years.""
""The SACA has made it with one of the great cricket grounds of the Commonwealth.""
"" I think we shall have no truck with the SANFL .""

MILLER/ROSS/HARRISON
What sort of players were they ?

Wally Miller was a determined half back flanker who was an ordinary kick. He was a schoolteacher from the Adelaide Hills. After his illness he became a radio commentator for a few years before he became an administrator with Norwood. He was an absolutely brilliant administrator who turned Norwood back into a powerhouse after a long period of decline.

Lester Ross was a skilful centreman/half forward. He was a completely different player to either of his sons.

Gerry Harrison was a long serving player for Norwood. After retiring he wrote in the Sunday mail as well as commentated on the ABC. Sadly as a footballer he is normally remembered as the back pocket player in the 1960 Grand Final. The Grand Final where "one game wonder" Barry Potts kicked seven goals on him.

A couple of other interesting players listed are Peter Koerner and Mike Daly. Peter Koerner played a brilliant first half in the 1957 Grand Final. He was opposed to Geof Motley who had to be shifted to half forward. Unfortunately for Norwood Motley kicked 7 goals once he was shifted. As a result of his game in the Grand final (and I venture to suggest as a payback for losing Haydn Bunton to Norwood the previous year) North appointed Koerner as coach in 1958. He had an outstanding first year with North taking them to the minor premiership. Unfortunately they suffered many injuries late in the year and went out in "straight sets". North then had a dreadful 1959 only winning three games and Koerner was sacked. he returned to Norwood but obviously didn't fit into Alan Killagrew's plans. He didn't make the 1960 Grand Final side and only played 2 games in 1961.

Michael Daly was an anscestor of the great Bos Daly, the first man to kick 23 goals in a game in SA league footy. He spent one year as a panellist on world of Sport, I think in 1979. He was one of the most outstanding panellists that I have ever seen yet he never continued in the role.

NEIL HAWKE
There was some discussion and confusion previously on when and why Hawke transferred from East Perth to WT[and not PA]
I have found this article

Late in 1961 the Hawke case transcended all other matters of football interest ,Hawke had returned to SA in 1960 determined not to play for PA again
Refused a clearance from PA to WT he stood out of League football in 1960
In May 1961 WT with the object of acquiring Hawke, unsuccessfully asked the full league to amend its by laws to make a footballer who plays Interstate for 3 years a free agent
Under SA by laws such a player is bound to his former club for 3 years after his return to SA
WT based its argument on another by law which enables an SA league player going to the country to become ''unattached'' after 3 years away from his former League club
However, subsequently a League tribunal released Hawke to WT , taking into account that as a result of PA granting a clearance to Hawke to play in WA, the PA club received a substantial sum of money

REX JOHNS[PA] 1954 -1963
134 games
451 goals
I have read Rex was an outstanding forward
Fos Williams named Johns in his best PA team from 1950-1973
Johns may or may not have been a contributing factor as to why the young and up and coming Neil Hawke left PA to play for East Perth

What may not be well known is that Rex Johns applied for a clearance from PA
Johns wanted a clearance to become the CD Seconds playing coach [I believe for the 1962 season]

Rex Johns certainly was a contributing factor in Neil Hawke leaving Port to play for East Perth. We have already covered Neil Hawke kicking 15 goals against South and then getting dropped two weeks later and missing out on the finals. The player Hawke got dropped for was Rex Johns who was returning from injury.

Ironically as Johns' career wound down at Port in the early 1960s he was replaced by another full forward who also played test cricket for Australia, Eric Freeman. In fact Freeman may have been full forward for Port in the 1963 premiership.

As an aside Hawke and Freeman shared the new ball for Australia versus India at Brisbane in January 1968.

As another aside Rex Johns brother Keith was also a full forward who had a couple of games for Port. He actually was cleared to Central and played a few games for them in their first year.

There was some more interesting coaching aspirations that didnt eventuate

GEOFF MOTLEY [1953-1966]
258 games
156 goals
PA playing coach 1959-1961, and replaced by Fos Williams for the 1962 season
Motley was named as GL coach for 1962
Stan Wickham was the current GL coach who could not coach for health reasons
PA refused Motley a clearance
Motley coached again 1967-1969 at NA

ALLAN KILLIGREW
This is from an article in 1962
Best unpublished story between seasons [1961/1962]- NW coach , Allan Killigrew , at a fairly late stage in discussions as well in line for the 1962 PA coaching job

It seems that there was a chance 3 guys wanted the 62 coaching job at Alberton
The other was Fos Williams who got the gig from 1962-1973
It ends up being a wise appointment as PA went on to win the 1962 Premiership

1959-1961
The 3 Premiership winning coaches all had something in common
They won a flag coaching in their first seasons
1959 Motley
1960 McCarthy
1961 Kerley

Hawke and Freeman were also members of Port Adelaide's most recent A grade cricket premiership in 1967-68. Port Adelaide made only 96, but then Freeman & Hawke took 5 apiece to knock over a star studded Prospect team for only 53.

Keith Johns was Central's leading goalkicker in 1964 with 22 goals from 11 games.

[quote="robranisgod"][quote="mal"]THIRD BEST CLUB ?

Even coming up to 1960 North with 8 premierships had to be in front of Torrens with 4 premierships.

Worth bearing in mind that at the time of the article, pre-1907 footy stats did not exist and in the period that mal is referring to, 1907-1959, North and Torrens both won four premierships, behind West six and Sturt five as well as Port and Norwood, although as mal's figures show North and Torrens had been more consistent than West or Sturt.

North had won five in that period, 1920, 1930, 1931, 1949 and 1952. I never could understand why stats from 1897 until 1906 at least weren't comsidered at that time. I can understand the argument to leave out the stats from pre 1897 (although I don't agree with the argument).

1920
1949
1952
1960
All these NA premiership years had something in common
NA finished in 5th spot the year after
Just some useless trivia

FWIW I consider NA the 3rd best team b4 the 60s started in the 1907-1959 time frame

Just for the record the comp was called :
1878-1898 Association
1899-1906 District
1907 + League

Why was it called District in that 8 season period ?

Others will know more than I, but Norwood official W.B.Griffiths put in a submission to the SAFA that players should represent the district in which they live, like the old district cricket system.

The new system of electoral football deprived Norwood of a number of established first class players, Magarey Medallist Alby Green being one. Others being A.D.Thomson, N.Mitchell, R.Correll, H.Faull, J.D.Daly, A.Daly, P.Fitzpatrick, W.B.Reed, amd J.Way.

B LUKE is he Brian Luke who played cricket at Western Youth ?
A MARRETT related to Paul Marrett ?
There was a PHILP that played cricket for Brompton in the mid 70s, is this the one ?, if so I played at the club at the same time[this club later represented by Punk Rooster, now called Fitzroy]

TRIVIA
MCBAIN
John Mcbain was to become a Bookmaker, one that Ive had a very good association with
John also became head of the Bookmakers League, struck me as a guy that would have been a tough man on a footy field
Johns son Scott became a radio personality
T OBST
Bubbles Obst could be seen driving taxis in the 1990s

CHARLIE ADAMS
On the PA Selection committee in 1961
Ended up winning a retrospective Magarey Medal winner after losing on count back in 1920 to the SA champ Dan Moriarty
The grandsons of Charlie went to high school with me
I am still a friend of one of those grandsons
Neither of those lads inherited their grandpas brilliance, but are both star punters !
I believe that Charlie Adams is also related to current Socceroo Brett Holman

All the Port Adelaide Marretts were related, from Saddleworth. I recall Peter, Bob, Paul and Murray. Bob once took all 10 wickets in an ATCA A1 Grand Final for Payneham. Another time he took 6/2 to dismiss WREI for only 4 runs. Central player Mick Daly played in that team ... obviously didn't make too many runs :)
