Some big margins yesterday!

Also saw in the Reserves at Mallala that Brian Montgomery played 2's and kicked 12 goals. Coming back from injury or no room now that the Pies have Scooter Hahn?

There's a huge gap between top four and the others at the moment. Without huge injury counts and massive form reversals I cant see the top 4 changing anything but order.

Would have thought that Hahn and Mont would compliment each other. Has Montgomery been playing or was this his first game for the season?

He's having a huge influence on games, not only in the ruck but around the ground. He hasn't dominated against a couple of the bigger ruckmen, Walker from Balak was a key for them getting back into the game a couple of weeks back and he didn't have it all to himself in the hitout dept against the man mountain Banton on saturday. He certainly did much more around the ground though.

I am feeling abit sorry for United at the moment. With their team struggling on the field the crowd did not seem to turn up on the weekend. I hope that they are regretting the P Burgoyne experiment, they could have picked a couple of cheaper and more long term recruits that may still be at the club this year.

It would be pretty hard to attract players there with no township, they would recruit who they can, the Burgoyne experiment could've worked positively as he could've attracted players out there.
Everyone that I know that have played at Longies have been full of praise for the people and the place.
It seems to work in cycles in the APFL, they'll have their turn again, great to see their junior colts in the 4, first time in a long time, excellent achievement

Yep, our crowds have been down this year but its probably because the results haven't been happening. Even when the side is in the game (hasn't been much this year) our crowd is so quiet that you can barely hear anyone applauad a good effort or a goal. This has been going on for a few years, and is a pet hate of mine. However, if the umpire makes a mistake you will most certainly hear our crowd letting him know :? . To me, the crowd would be much better support to the side by cheering them on.

It has nothing to do with Burgo in my opinion, more with our lack of recruiting this year. I mean the past 3 weeks we have played with either 0 or -1 points (we are allowed up to 12) and as Lightning has said our township and drawing area is very small meaning we don't have enough youth to step up into the A Grade to continually play with 0 points. We need to spend those points to remain competitive as every other team has improved from last year (full credit to them), and the league as a whole has improved this year as a result.

Creature, your supporters were out at the HB match, only a few but they were heard. the culture of umpire bashing in country football is very healthy and something that will take many years to change. it is not only your club but the thing to remember is at least we do not have the supporter punch ups like some of the SAAFL games of recent years.

I'm not so sure MC, all these huge winning margins must be of concern. Not just in the A Grade but even more so in the B Grade and even in the colts I just can't see how clubs such as United and HWE can turn around their massive lack of depth, particularly in the junior grades.

I think he's saying that most of the clubs are better than last season.
United's junior colts must be giving them some pleasure for the future.
Two Wells & Balaklava will always hold the monopoly on the junior comps due to population, both of them run their juniors very professionally therefore they will generally retain their players and being successful means they'll attract more.
Mallala get ripped off by Trinity College and Virginia should be stronger than what they are in the juniors.
It's a credit to Hamley, Hummocks and United to be able to continue to field junior sides.

I meant the standard of the top A grade sides has improved IMO, and us and probably Hummocks havn't kept up and gone backwards slightly, hence the wider gap. Hamley are/were coming from a long way back.

As for the ladder, has anyone noticed that the top 4 sides in each grade bar junior colts (which is 1 out), directly correlates with the 4 teams with the greatest direct population to draw players from.

Is this the points system already having an impact? Is it just co-incidence and a natural cylce of teams fluctuation?

If its the latter, then fair enough and swings and roundabouts would assume it will fix itself up over time.

If its the former, then this points rule needs changing from next year to allow extra points based on population disadvantages. As Donkey has mentioned its already clear what's happening with results and what will continue to happen based on the huge margins which are consistent with the more populated teams winning convincingly on the less populated in ALL GRADES. This IMO will only continue to be the case in the foreseeable future.

Yeah, tough one to analyse.

If United used up their 12 points this year, the team would be far more competitive.

Not sure how many points HWE is using but wouldn't imagine it's used its full allocation and Hamley have, but also got some locals back.
