They are sensible changes but it still doesnt alter the major issue. Their results are weighted heavily on availability and injuries, without putting a cap on AFL listed players we are never going to get anywhere near a level playing field. At the moment all we can do is hope for injuries in the AFL sides so that it weakens the SANFL side.

I'm a pretty good player at U18 level and look a certain league prospect if I don't get drafted.

Bugger, I don't get drafted. Spoken to by Port and/or the Crows. Go play Amateurs or Country footy for a year young fella - then we'll add you to our list. If you're black, white and teal through and through - you can still have a career at the Magpies. Plus, you've got more chance of getting to play AFL with us than an SANFL club, where you'll probably be battling in the Reserves for a few years anyway.

Meanwhile at Oval Avenue, they're wondering why the retention rate of quality U18's is so low and why these Port kids aren't super keen to come in to such a quality program.

Kids do want to play AFL. I bet they'd rather play AFL Reserves as well. Give them that opportunity while still coming through the SANFL system instead of closing doors. And at the same time send the AFL Reserves sides to the VFL!

Little 'Johny Le Fevre' has a generational connection to the PAFC.
He goes & plays for Port Districts whilst he's 17 to 20 because he doesn't have a connection with WWTFC, but his mates all play @ Port Districts as well.
Then when the time is right, he's given a 1 year contract with PAFC & plays Reserves for a year, hoping to be Rookie Listed or Drafted.

Nice work Slaven & Co. - did you not consider this REALITY?

The SANFL has announced changes to the Adelaide and Port Adelaide Football Clubs’ player regulation rules in the State League competition for season 2015.
Among the changes, all non-AFL listed players must be aged under 23, cannot be contracted for more than one year or recruited from interstate.
Adelaide will not be permitted to use SANFL players from rival clubs as top-up players next year.
The changes, ratified by the SA Football Commission, have been finalised after the league’s ongoing review of the regulations for Adelaide’s SANFL team and the restructured Port Adelaide Magpies.
The aim of this year’s review was to bring the on-field regulations for both Adelaide and Port Adelaide into line.
All non-AFL aligned SANFL clubs were involved in the review process, with the eight teams provided with an opportunity to recommend changes throughout the consultation period.
Adelaide and Port Adelaide also provided feedback on the proposed regulations during the review.

2015 PLAYER REGULATION CHANGES

1. To be eligible for inclusion on the PAMFC or AFC Supplementary List, a person must be under the age of 23 before January 1 the year in which the player is included on the Supplementary List. A player may play as a top-up player past the age of 23 as long as he is first listed prior to the age of 23. Adelaide and Port Adelaide will be able to retain current contracted players already over the age of 23.
2. PAMFC & AFC cannot contract players for more than one year. This will not impact on current players contracted for more than one season.
3. Players included on the list of AFC or PAMFC cannot be recruited from outside of South Australia. This rule will not be retrospective, allowing those already contracted to Adelaide and Port to continue playing next year.
4. Remove the option for AFC to source top-up players from SANFL clubs. From 2015, Adelaide won’t include players from rival SANFL clubs, with all top-up players to be recruited from Community Football clubs.
Following the changes for 2015, the player regulations will continue to be reviewed by the SANFL, its clubs and AFC and PAFC on an annual basis.

Pathetic changes, this competition is shite, zero integrity. If my club hadn't voted no, I'd never go again. Hopefully the port power professionals can go back to back ( if central don't win next year).

FFS, this will have minimal effect on anything that is the problem, well done SANFL you morons. Port get to keep there gifts they have this year too, what a disgrace. I still think it's total rubbish that previously AFL listed players or SANFL quality players are signing for 200-400 a game, when will they look into the perks *not included in these contracts, they never will be because the league doesn't care and what penalty would they possibly impose anyway. Should've been players must be u/23 period, not allowed to keep them for longer then that and it should've been retrospective. Waiting to hear how long they have to be out of the SANFL system to be recruited, how much they can be paid and if they still get a leadership player. Like i said they will get away with whatever they want anything, this is a disgrace. Well done SANFL

So again the rules are unclear. Can they sign an 18 year old on a one year contract, followed by 4-5 more one year contracts until the kid turns 23? Or is it one year only and then out on his arse regardless of age? And wouldn't the restriction to only recruiting from SA hurt the SANFL clubs even further? To be clear, I don't really have a problem with rule changes, it's just the vagueness of the whole situation...again.

Edit...PAFC provides the clarity: "Contracts for all of the club’s SANFL players will only be permitted for a term of up to one year, however contracted players will be eligible to have their deals renewed at the end of each season for another period of up to one year. Contracted players will not be forced to leave the club after they turn 23, should the club elect to extend their contract for another season."

So, essentially the AFL sides can recruit an 18 year old and renew a 1 year contract year after year until he retires. I guess it gives the other clubs a chance each year to poach them with the lure of a higher wage and a regular league game. Pretty wishy washy.

Unfortunately I can see some sad times ahead for the SANFL, Gilligan again stated yesterday that he is keen to look at a midseason draft by 2016, the AFL clubs could possibly raid the state leagues for talent and we have the scenerio where a team near the top of the SANFL ladder midseason suddenly loses players to the AFL, what a joke.
Even worse would be if the Crows or Port pick them up and we have a situation where the player plays against his old club in the same season

Don't be selfish. If this gets more players into the afl, the ultimate goal of almost every young player playing in the sanfl, this is pretty obviously a good thing for those players. Clubs cannot be selfish and they need to realise that they are not the final desired destination for most players

This isn't the 80s anymore where they were just poaching players. The sanfl is a stepping stone, whether you like it or not.

There were nearly some real rules in there. Lucky they added clauses like "those already here can stay" "no one over 23 unless they've already been here and playing well enough for us to want to keep them"

If ever, as long as they keep signing them year after year they can play from the age of 18-35 or more if they want.
They would want to get rid of the Port Magpies reserves team very quickly for any impact to be felt at all

Seriously, the AFL, the self appointed "custodians of the game" are doing their best to completely f*** up all grades and leagues as best they can. If any sport in the world needed a base model of how to disenfranchise, polarise and undermine all facets of a sport they need to look no further than the VFL/AFL. It's rotting from the bottom up and they can't see it for all the money, greed and media sycophants that keep to the beat of the AFL drum for fear of losing their cut of the money pie.
