Port Adelaide’s General Manager of Football, Chris Davies, says the appointment enables former Magpies coach Chad Cornes to move into an AFL development role where he will work closely with the club’s young forwards.

Cornes highlighted professional development as the key factor behind his change in roles.

“My two years in charge of the Magpies taught me so much about coaching and about myself as well,” he said.

“This opportunity though allows me to focus on getting the best out of a core group of young players, and also to work more closely with the rest of the AFL assistant coaches to get a better understanding of what those roles demand.”

Chad is capable of doing either, hence the question.

I'd imagine it will be working on game day with the SANFL side in an assistants role ( forward line ) and then working on game day with the AFL side as the runner.

During the week it would be a development role working with the young forwards.

Previously maybe, but not these days. Any SANFL coach looking for a career in the industry would accept most AFL roles either for the coin or to get the foot in the door.

THE PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB can now confirm that SA Police will not be proceeding with any charges against Paddy Ryder relating to the events that occurred in Hindley Street on 1 October 2017.

Ryder has acknowledged a written caution from SA Police and the matter is now at an end.

Ryder and the Port Adelaide Football Club now consider the matter closed and will be making no further comment.

THE cousin of Port Adelaide Football Club player Patrick ‘Paddy’ Ryder has admitted he rugby tackled a police officer outside an Adelaide nightclub after watching the AFL Grand Final with the All Australian.

Charges against Ryder were dropped on Tuesday and he was instead issued with a caution by SA Police.

On Wednesday, his 24-year-old cousin Kyle Jones appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court and admitted to assaulting police and disorderly behaviour after the altercation outside Signature Nightclub, on Hindley St, on October 1.

Prosecutors told the court that Jones and his group — which included Ryder, 29, and his 22-year-old brother Reid Ryder — left the nightclub after an incident inside the premises about 12.30am.

He said Jones was in an “agitated” state and picked up a bollard, before threatening security staff.

“Police were called ... and involved in dealing with that group,” he said.

“He (Jones) rugby tackled, for lack of a better word, one of the police officers.”

Lawyer Megan McDowall, for Jones, said Jones had travelled for 22 hours with other family members from his West Australian community to Adelaide to watch the Grand Final with his cousin.

“They went out to Signature Nightclub ... and my client’s cousin Reid Ryder was assaulted in the nightclub,” she said.

“There was some sort of altercation. He leaves the nightclub with a bloody face.”

She said Patrick Ryder’s wife Jessica — who was present in court to support Jones — got the group outside, where everyone was in an “agitated” state.

“Reid Ryder is being helped by Patrick,” she said.

“Mr Jones is relatively intoxicated — he comes from a dry community and hadn’t had a drink in five months.

“He saw police trying to arrest Ried Ryder and was concerned for him.”

She said it was at that moment, Jones decided to tackle the police officer to the ground.

Magistrate Maria Panagiotidis described Jones’ behaviour as “unacceptable”.

“I accept that you were affected by alcohol and were agitated and that you’re not ordinarily a violent person,” she said.

She imposed a conviction, fined Jones $500, plus $894 in court fees.

It is unclear the state of the charges against Reid Ryder.

The Port Adelaide Football Club issued a statement declaring: “Ryder and the club now consider the matter closed and will be making no further comment.”

Approximately 20-30 needles for Ryder for memory I believe but not great in any case.
It was good seeing him get towelled up against us this year though and hope our fans greet him warmly again next year
