Loving this thread.
I've been acting as linesman in my kids' soccer games, I feel like I should start contributing.

Re: Umpiring - The diary of a local umpy.
As I mentioned elsewhere my 15yo son is in his 3rd year of umpiring and is pretty good at it. For convenience he does Flaggy u10's and u12's back to back on a Sunday morning. u10's is fine but in u12's my 11yo son plays and Im assistant coach so we have all 3 facets of the game covered, has created some funny moments and great talk over the dinner table Sunday night.
Already been told off for approaching him during a break (was just to tell him that he won't be playing in the u15 game straight afterwards) as I forgot coaches aren't allowed to approach umpires during the game

Over here we get umpires escorts, so they escort us onto the ground, stand around us at 1/4 & 3/4 time, and escort us off the oval at half time & games end. One supplied from each club. I feel its a bit of overkill, but I guess there must have been issues in the past to make the clubs do this.
The only time I approach the umps during a game I have my league shirt or jacket on so you get past "security" pretty easily.

Good work CM
I umpired U10s and U12s when I was 15 or so, used to get $40 a game which I was pretty happy with
Certainly gives you an appreciation about how hard it is.

Re: Umpiring - The diary of a local umpy.
I umpired a couple of year 2/3 internal scratch matches at our kids primary school over the past 2 weeks, then got thrown in the deep end and umpired a year 4/5 half time game at South v Eagles last Saturday at Hickinbotham.
Extremely tough, particularly as the 2/3s dont tackle whereas the 4/5s do. Additionally the lack of zones meant I had an AFL like maul at many ball ups.
14 minutes of game play and I had a serious sweat up. Also got $20 for my efforts... not sure I could do it for a living!

Re: Umpiring - The diary of a local umpy.
The wife has banned me from ringing our umpire boss while on the piss.
After my grandfather's funeral I thought I'd ring him and let him know that I'm cool to do an A grade game this week (I've got things on generally Saturday arvo and need an early finish so I've been doing 17's & B's back to back).
While I was on the phone nominating what game I'd like to do I said I'll do an Under 14 game too close by.
He got it mixed up and appointed me a 14's at Mallala (10:20am) then A's at Balaklava (2:45pm), made for a long day considering I live at Mawson Lakes. Left at 9am got home around 7pm flat as a tack, she wasn't thrilled.
Got my regular 17's & B's this week at Long Plains, home by 3:30 so she can take me to the pub for an hour or so.

The younger kids are harder as the rules vary so much and common sense doesn't always prevail.

Corona Man wrote:Dear Diary,
Got a text Sunday morning asking me to take an appointment due to another ump falling ill. It was for my daughters Div 3 womens game Sunday arvo. Not ideal but the league was a bit stuck & they knew I would be at the game anyway. I had specifically asked NOT to be appointed to her games, but what can you do?
Played on a small oval, that the council had done some work to during the week. Whatever it was that they did, meant it was a mud heap! Fairly uneventful game, conditions not helping. Did the game with the NFL umpires boss, who is an ex AFL ump. I won't name drop, but for him to be on this oval, officiating this standard..... Its a long way from the G!
At half time I asked him what was the best spray he ever copped at the top level. Said he couldn't recall the best one, but was happy to share the funniest one. It involved Wayne Carey.
Carey to Ump - "Hey, can I be penalized for thinking"
Ump to Carey - "No Wayne, you can't be penalized for thinking"
Carey to Ump - "That's great, coz I think you are a ******* dickhead"
The other one he gave me was Peter Bell..... said he just hated umpires.... with a passion.
Didn't get to ping Miss C, may have missed a push in the back to her..... so she told me in the car one the way home.
I don't get too fazed about big mouths out there, I don't mid giving a little out.
A couple of years ago in the 3rd quarter after penalising the same lad for about the 5th time for an FAD a voice from behind said "You're f****** shit umpire"
I looked around and said to the dude I assumed it came from "And your two kicks have gone straight to the opposition"
A few blokes form both teams had a good laugh as he replied with "Yeah, you're not far wrong there".
The players are humans, I've played the game long enough to know we all get frustrated so I find a line of what is acceptable.
There's been games where I've got to the third quarter and realized that I hadn't paid a free yet.

No, I bookmark the genres that I frequent, "other footy leagues" is neither here nor there for me so I don't come in here much.

Re: Umpiring - The diary of a local umpy.
Umpired a 17's and a B Grade game Saturday, I must say the B Grade was an unexpected result as the underdog won in a cliffhanger that went right to the last minute.
The pleasing part was the conduct of both sides, usually close games bring out the worst in players and spectators, it was a great game to umpire and be a part of, always a great sign of sportsmanship when every player from the losing side still shakes your hand and comments on the umpiring for the day.

Assuming these are back to back games? Do you run them both with another umpy?

Over here we do (NFL - Metro Melb), mainly in junior games up to about U/14, and the odd womens game. Pretty much 15's & 16's up is all 2 umps.
I had had a run of junior games, running solo. But I have moved into the next phase (we get shuffled around) and yesterday I did an U/17's game followed by a Womens seniors game. Played at Eltham - junior home of The Bont, Josh Caddy & Vlaustin among others. Certainly easier running with another ump. The womens game was a "warm down" following the boys game which was a reasonable standard, and the ball went coast to coast on a number of occasions.
Get this coming weekend off, which is good, as the knee has flared up, and now I have strained an Achilles as well.
Got to daughters game in time to see the last half, they had a good win, only the second for the season. Miss C took a nice mark, and laced out a girl down field with the pass. It was one of 3 touches I saw her get. At least she made the most of it!
