When does Daylight savings finish? I'm worried I'm wearing out my headlight globes driving to work in the morning.

actually i must admit it is rare for it to still be dark when i get to work and it was this morning

Having to have the light on to shit, shower and shave in the morning rather than relying on natural daylight makes me concerned about the effect on global warming

Daylight savings in October and March should be outlawed so we can save the planet!

Is the Cost of Living crisis as bad as the media makes it out to be or is it a media beat up? Certainly some are struggling but would those people be struggling anyway?

Record crowd for Round 1 of the AFL
NRL crowds up.
NBL Finals sold out.
Auction results/clearance rates very high.
LIV sold out
Gather Round sold out.
I know house prices and rent is increasing to some but not all.

Yes, but Covid affected them more ... stood down or lost their jobs during the worst of Covid, and rapidly rising interest rates post Covid were extra-ordinary events that disproportionally impacted them.

Not sure I agree with that, Job Keeper actually helped many with their finances. Rising interest rates definitely but I’ve had my say on that previously

No disrespect, but obviously you haven't been affected. There are many that have, by losing income from losing their job or receiving a reduced wage under job keeper, and then having to either pay large increases in mortgage payments or unable to rent.

There were instances of some people being better off under job keeping but I suspect that's the exception rather than the rule.

People who were able to ride the wave have prospered during the same period and the gap has widened, I think, much more than is usually the case due to these extra-ordinary events.

Had the exact conversation on the weekend.

In short I arrived at the fact people are still living life on the back of the COVID restrictions, people are out and about as we were pre-COVID and big ticket things are the ones suffering.

Harvey Norman sales were down 7.8% in the back half of last year ( year on year ). Travel is hard to gauge, there's less planes in the air and prices are up based on demand but my guess is people, in general, are taking less big holidays compared to before COVID. Particularly the middle of the road trips, weekends to Melbourne for the footy type thing.

New car sales were a record high last year, that number is already slowing on the back of the post Xmas period.

I also think post-COVID people are just living life as opposed to worrying so much about nest eggs or what might come in years ahead.

I think it’s a good conversation to have.

Harvey Norman would have to be lower in sales as they had record sales and profits in the three previous years They couldn’t keep that up.

Lot of people still seem to be holidaying in our own country are than overseas although I know many from all ages going O/S

If you are middle/older aged, mortgage all but paid off (or paid off), have independent children, and your salary is increasing in line with inflation, then there is no cost of living crisis for you.

If you are young, living at home, at uni or working full time, paying no rent, and with large disposable income, same again the cost of living crisis does not affect you.

If you are a young couple, massive mortgage/rent, flat salary (maybe single salary), young kids in school etc, the cost of living increase affects you greatly.

I think it just depends on your situation.

A lot of those events are:
- big ticket events that are always going i be oversubscribed - e.g. Gather Round, finals, GP (An extreme example would be the AFL GF - even in a catastrophically bad depression that would never fail to sell out)
- events that are likely to attract perhaps a more middle class crowd (e.g. Fringe, LIV)

So I'm not too surprised that they're selling out.

Still, there could certainly be some truth to what you're saying.

It's a good point to raise, as on the face of it, it doesn't seem to make sense, like the booming house prices before the interest rate rises. Like the insane used car prices which were grossly inflated (people paying more than new cars FFS) purely because of the lack of supply.

Remember, there were big hits to manufacturing and logistics during Covid, so people couldn't buy what they wanted due to the supply issues.

I'm struggling to work out the 4 women that live in my house, let alone working out how society operates.

And you can’t compare 50 year old white collar workers with older kids and minimal mortgage to 30 year old blue collar workers with young families and big mortgages.

Don't put all blue collar in that bucket. I can tell you most blue collar would be earning well above my white collar salary.
