After 13 seasons at AFL level, Port Adelaide defender Rory Atkins will retire from football at season’s end.

Atkins arrived at Alberton from Gold Coast during the 2024 trade period following four seasons with the Suns and eight years at Adelaide.

The 31-year-old returned to South Australia with partner Georgia and daughter Daisy, seeking to be closer to family and explore an opportunity at a new club.

Atkins brought mentorship qualities and a strong on-field voice to Alberton, speaking to his leadership ability and knowledge of the game.

He has played two games at AFL level so far this year after making his club debut against Sydney in Round 6, and has taken the field 10 times for the Magpies in the SANFL.

Absolutely, but why is age a barrier, surely the more experience you have in this field is more important than your birth certificate?

Plus :

1) They understand the Port Adelaide Football Club like few others would
2) They're part of organizations not individuals working alone ( they're a special breed! )
3) They wouldn't be there to hold the players hands, they'd be there to look at how the organization is structured

Port have maintained under Koch that stability is paramount and in most organizations I would agree with that. Changes in key personnel for change sake in business ( and that's what AFL club are now ) doesn't always equate to successful management. I'd argue it's the opposite, but identifying if those key personnel are the right people for the job today is the key.

We're changing our coach, we all know that. Koch has alluded to his tenure coming to an end in the next year or two. The CEO role I believe is more about business than football. Davies as football boss is the one who I think needs to be moved on next.

I don't mind them being Port people but like Carr they need to have been to and experienced other clubs.

Some of the names I've heard have Port connections but have been in other organizations. I hope they come off as I think they'll be good additions.
