Problem is they couldn't even make these equitable :Trader wrote:Exactly. We can't have it both ways.Booney wrote:We're admonishing West Coast for poor list and draft management yet we're sinking the boot into Brisbane for theirs.Trader wrote:I don't understand the hate towards Brisbane for all the 'free' players they get.
Let's not forget, 4 clubs refused to bid on Levi Ashwood, before he was finally taken at Pick 5.
The clubs themselves are allowing Brisbane to save points for their bids.
The problem with the Father / Son though is the inequity in eligibility and the advantages the Northern states get with their academies and I'm with the St Kilda boss on this one, enough is enough.
Eligibility of Father/Son is interesting. VFL sides needing 100 games yet SA sides needing 300. But yes, hopefully that is resolved over time and once the AFL sides in SA have been around more than 30 years they can drop the link to the 5 SANFL clubs each and just have it at 100 games with the AFL side.
The northern states academies help no doubt, but the AFL needs someone investing in the kids in these northern states that otherwise would likely play rugby.
Also, its not like the southern states dont have their own rorts too. NGA, Cat B rookies, etc all get abused too.
The system isn't perfect, no doubt, but when the other clubs make it easier for Brisbane by not bidding at the right time, then it's poor form to turn around and complain that Brisbane have it easy, in my opinion.
A player is eligible if his father played 100 or more senior games for the clubs. In the cases of the two interstate clubs with historic (Tenuous I say) links to Victorian Football League teams, namely the Brisbane Lions and the Sydney Swans, the sons of players who appeared 100 times for their Victorian predecessors: the Fitzroy Lions in the case of the Brisbane Lions; and the South Melbourne Football Club in the case of the Sydney Swans
The West Coast Eagles could select any player whose father had made 150 WAFL appearances prior to 1987 for Claremont, East Perth, West Perth or Subiaco.
Adelaide could select any player whose father made 200 SANFL appearances prior to 1991 for South Adelaide, Norwood, Glenelg or Sturt.
Fremantle could select any player whose father has made 150 WAFL appearances prior to 1995 for East Fremantle, South Fremantle, Perth or Swan Districts.
Port Adelaide can select any player whose father has made 200 SANFL appearances prior to 1997 for the Port Adelaide Magpies, North Adelaide, West Adelaide, Central District, Woodville or West Torrens.

Jamie Elliott has locked in a two-year deal at Collingwood, rebuffing Gold Coast's interest in the free agent. He's now signed at the Pies until the end of 2027

When they go bad, you get a situation like this where the player is playing VFL for the next 5 years on a mil per year.Dutchy wrote:Aren't these long term deals great

FA does bugger all for the bottom teams
Cats, Lions, Crows just getting stronger while the rest go backwards
Saints will be better but they’re still the Saints
As for breaking contracts…………

Re: AFL 2025 Silly Season
List Manager Tim Lamb said it was a good opportunity to sit down with Oliver alongside new Senior Coach Steven King and outline the club’s plans.
“Today was a good chance to sit down with Clayton and share how Steven and the coaches see the game being played, and where the opportunities lie for him,” Lamb said.
“We were upfront with Clayton around the role he is likely to play next season and the need for him to develop his craft beyond the midfield to have his biggest impact within the team.
“It was honest and respectful, and Clayton is now clear on what we see his role being next year, and how we think he can best contribute.
“Clayton is contracted for another five years. If he wants to explore his options in the upcoming AFL Trade Period, we will respect that. Should he remain in the red and blue, we will of course continue to support and embrace him as part of our club.”
Clayton, your role is to explore your options.

VFL get 1 club 100 games
WAFL get 4 clubs 150 games
SANFL get 5 clubs 200 games
You couldn't make it less games for the WAFL and SANFL without removing some clubs from their pools. Plenty to whack the AFL with but this is low on the list.
That said do away with all F/S and Academies and let the chips lay where they fall. It is really the only fair equalisation tactic, and even then the lower sides will still just be feeder clubs for Geelong, Collingwood and Hawthorn given the players have too much power now.

Agree, it's not the worst system. Clearly not perfect, but the AFL has much bigger problems.Zelezny Chucks wrote:How would you make it equitable?

I think ones the interstate clubs have been through their first generational cycle (say 30 years), they should drop their state league clubs and only be getting Father/Son selections from players who played for the AFL side.
Brings everyone into line as having 1 club worth of feeders, all with the minimum games requirement of 100.
