Re: Essendon
Captain position is over-rated in modern day AFL. More of a media figurehead than anything else.
With all the leadership groups, position line leaders, 49 different coaches, their role is more about being a morale leader rather than a decision maker.
As long as the captain is a bloke who won't shirk a contest their ability / skill / footy brains isn't really overly important. Would be more important that they hold high training / lifestyle standards, is someone in your group that can relate up and down the football department hierarchy, up and down the age demographic of the playing group.
I mean Richmond won flags with Jack Higgins telling jokes as part of their pre game 'pump up'

Oh, I was with you till this. This is the biggest one. If you are making dumb footy brain mistakes, I reckon that undoes all the good work you do, especially given he's in defence.whufc wrote:Captain position is over-rated in modern day AFL. More of a media figurehead than anything else.

Yeah i probably mean more in the case of don't do completely dumb shit like being undisciplined on field giving away 50m penalties or turning the ball over in stupid areas.gadj1976 wrote:Oh, I was with you till this. The other side is the amount of 'say' a captain would have in the teams strategies, tactics, zones ectt would be very limited. Yes, they would have to be smart enough to understand them and communicate them but they wouldn't be the ones creating plans against oppositions.

Cripps is as dumb as they come, very poor leader and reflected in Carltons lack of success.whufc wrote:Yeah i probably mean more in the case of don't do completely dumb shit like being undisciplined on field giving away 50m penalties or turning the ball over in stupid areas.gadj1976 wrote:Oh, I was with you till this. There is no way he could possibly communicate the team tactics to the rest of the team, probably why no young player develops at Carlton.
Im not sure Merret was much better. The best player often is not the best captain, they are likely to be the best player because they are more likely to be in their own bubble and a more selfish player than someone like a McGrath.
I actually fear this might be a turning point for Essendon

Re: Essendon
What part is incorrect? Are you going to tell me everytime youve heard Cripps talk youre wowed by his intelligence and football smarts? There is no doubt Cripps and Merret are the most selfish players in their respective teamsgadj1976 wrote:You do make some ridiculous comments some times but even I think you've outdone yourself here.daysofourlives wrote: Cripps is as dumb as they come, very poor leader and reflected in Carltons lack of success.

Re: Essendon
Essendon's Zach Merrett has parted ways with his manager after their failed attempt to get him traded to Hawthorn

Re: Essendon
Couple of takeaways from this:
Wonder if this means Merrett will be more inclined to stay now.
Wonder how much damage this has done to Petroro.

The pair of them came out of the trade period looking like absolute idiots, Petroro's carrying on as the clock ticked down in the Hawthorn box was comedy gold.Dutchy wrote:Zach sounds like a great bloke...
