Ended up going there a fair bit earlier to give her a hand with something, had a really nice afternoon/evening.

Will probably be heading there this Saturday again.

I’m not trying to start a disagreement with this, I’m trying to understand the logic.

Why is the taxpayer paying for people to take older people or disabled people to such places as shopping?

Had a discussion over the weekend where I know a person who takes an older lady grocery shopping and a coffee/cake for two hours twice a week and she is paid $75 an hour. See this in shops all the time

NDIS rort, the government has to be seen to be doing something. I know a couple of young kids that are carers, and they do stuff like take people to movies, etc.

If it helps the elderly on pensions get out and about and do their weekly chores and doctors appointments, I’m happy to pay it.

The logic, whether borne out by any economic analysis, is that in the case of Aged Care, it is cheaper to provide funding to older people who have been assessed to keep them in their home, rather than clog up Aged Care homes or even hospitals.

The funding, if approved after an assessment, can provide home improvements such as toilet and bathroom rails, aids such as lift chairs, shower chairs, walking aids, etc, also domestic assistance such as cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene, and shopping and travel assistance.

I’m sure there are some that take the piss, but it’s essential for a lot of people to allow them to keep some semblance of independence.

There were some changes to Aged Care assessments and subsequent assistance from Nov 1, whereby those with some means are now required to contribute more to the costs via co-payments on a sliding scale.

It is also possible for people to fully fund themselves, possibly with assistance from family.

We have a house 3 doors down that houses some special needs people with 24 hour carers. Cause no issues (other than workers cars clogging the street) however in a given day there would be at least 4 ambulance arrivals. Thats just one house with 3 people. Is this a great use of government resources? I’m not sure

I’m thinking about these things after reading papers about Australias spending and finances

Dude, I hope you are never are in the position to require such assistance for yourself or someone close to you. I have very close family who do, and there is no way that they could live any sort of life without govt assistance via NDIS. Yes, there are massive rorts and waste due to govt inefficiency and poor management of services, but these services are literally life savers for many, many people.

We are a better society to have such things, otherwise we may as well go down the route of the US and not give a flying faark about having a social conscious and just leave people for dead.

I wasn’t suggesting that these such people get no assistance but there has to be a better more cost effective way.

We can say the same about how govt operates full stop, the inefficiencies are enormous. I agree that we should maximise expenditure and minimise waste, but that’s a magic recipe that has eluded all since time immemorial. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to get there though.

Closed facilities such as Glenside when multi story buildings would be a far better option with staff.

Almost like hospitals for those that need help. That would free up a crap load of homes for the young people trying to buy a home.
