Saw the title of this thread and immediately thought of Daryl "Noogs" Rady.

Probably throw in Cornesy as well - love him or hate him, he was a character.

I knew Tony "Doc" Clarkson long after he had retired from playing with Sturt and was running the Renal Transplant Unit at the QEH.
I saw him play when I was a kid too. Good ruckman.

Yes, a very good ruckman. 6'4" tall and 13 stone wringing wet. I recall a funny story about Tony Clarkson, I think Neil Kerley told it. He was chosen in the ruck for SA against Victoria in a state game. The coach Fos Williams was addressing the team pre-match.

He walked up to Doc, eyeballed him and said "I don't want any of that Sturt checkside crap Tony, I want you to meet these guys right up the front!!!". Clarkson thought of the Victorian ruckman of the day ... "Nicholls, Schultz, Ditterich, Farmer and Teasdale". He replied to Williams, "Foster, there's one thing you ought to know. The application of physical force is not my particular forte".

Apparently Fos' eyes were spinning because he didn't have a clue what Doc was talking about, and it took everything for other players not to burst out laughing.

I could believe that. Tony was intelligent and had a dry sense of humour. I not seen any evidence either run in the Williams family.
I once read Foster's book, "The Gap", which seemed to be about bullying your kids into submission before they went feral as the only way to stop it happening.

Doc Clarkson was Director of the Renal Unit at RAH.
He worked under Jim Lawrence at QEH, and then took over from him for a while before going to the RAH. I don't know whether he was ever officially named "Director" at QEH.

From my club West torrens it would have to be Aldo Floreani, Steve Pavlich, Scruff Hanna, Bruce lindsey, Darryl Schimmelbush, scott Morphett, Micheal Long, Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed, john roberts.
From Eagles Jon Floreani, Matthew pavlich, Gav Colville, Matt Kluzek, Chris Kluzek, Andrew rogers.
Woodville: Andrew Taylor, Allan Jackovic, Garth Newton
Port: Greg Anderson
Glenelg: Peter Maynard
Norwood: Aish,Brett james
Westies: Glenn Goss, roger luders, Fielke
North: Jarmans, John Roberts
We're in hell right now gentlemen. Believe me. And we can stay here, get the shit kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell... one inch at a time.

Bill Bennett is an interesting one. He played only 11 games for Carlton over three seasons and played in their 1968 Premiership team.

He went off the radar for a few year then appeared in the South Adelaide team in 1972. I remember his as a real hard player with considerable skills. I recall him really putting the wind up Phil Carman one day at Adelaide Oval and it was perhaps the first signs that Fabulous Phil could be put of his game with physical intimidation.

What more can you tell me about Bennett?

Does anyone remember the guy who did the voice overs (sort of as a co host) on ABC's tv coverage a few years back. I think it was probably early 90's. He played in 1 or 2 premierships in the late 60's with Sturt, quite an unusual name, quite a quirky guy, used to tell one or two stories about driving his hippy wagon to the footy, may even have slept in it one night before a GF..

I think it may be Peter Endersbee you are referring to.

I started watching SANFL in 1975 when we moved down from Darwin
I was immediately taken by Flash Graham and Rick Davies, but there were others such as Tony Burgan, Sandy Nelson, etc, etc
from other clubs players such as Dean Mobbs, Lyle Skinner, Wilbur Wilson, Ralph Sewer, the Pavlich brothers, Geoff Baynes, Roger Woodcock, John Wynne, there were so many players that were impressionable to a young fella :)

the weekends just couldnt come around fast enough back then (still cant sometimes  ) and I guess I was lucky as dad used to take me every weekend and he was a footy park member back then so went to many games there

Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

off topic answer, parents were from here in the first place and moved up to Darwin in the mid 60's when it was growing, were always going to move back and Tracy accelerated the move by a couple of years

back on topic, I remember watching some of the SANFL lads running around in the Darwin comp, Dean Ottens, Mike Poulter (he of the big hair  ) and Flash Graham
