Realistically though does it change your viewing experience much whether its 90 overs or 86 overs. .

I reckon they should make 90 overs mandatory, and just extend the last session until it's complete.

Most days would only fall a handful of overs short of 90 at a guess, so you're talking like extra 20-30min?

Either that, or make every 1st and 3rd session 2.5hrs.

If you've got to bowl the overs, you'll do it.. just like T20 and their time constraints.

Not sure it's all on the cricketers with over rate though - tv rights, advertisements etc.. they need their air time. If cricketers were racing between overs in 30 seconds all day, wouldn't be time for commercial breaks and advertisement.

I get how slow over rates are silly and the fact their for change of gloves etc.

I mean if it wasnt for the over counter on the tv screen or the scoreboard i could never tell you how many overs have been bowled or whether they are going fast or not.

I again make the points that:
1. If I pay to watch 90 overs, I would like to watch 90 overs.
2. If we're OK with 86 overs, are we OK with 82? 78? 70 overs in a day's play?

For more than one hundred years of test cricket, they didn't have trouble getting the overs. As Fred 'The Demon' Spofforth said, "Boys, this thing can be done". Obviously, that requires batsmen to do the right thing as well as the fielding side.

What I don’t agree with whatsoever is that making 90 overs mandatory’ or anything like that is going to make even the tiniest difference to the state of test cricket globally.

I’ll go as far to say it could almost have the opposite effect and hurt test cricket eg will the quality drop with ‘tired’ bowlers, will the extra half an hour of days play become a further deterrent for families to take kids as it goes even longer. Like others have said I’m not sure it’s 100% the played fault either with tv rights, broadcasting being an issue.

How to Solve the "umpires call" Nonsense

To be LBW the ball must be hitting any part of MIDDLE Stump Only
Still keep 3 stumps so you can be bowled
To make this fairer for the bowlers the ball can pitch outside leg and does not have to hit inline when playing a shot (another ambiguous term)

Having said that, I think they have to get rid of Umpires call, if technology says it was hitting the stumps it should be out. If the umpire gave Head out in this case he would have been out, that doesn’t make much sense to me.

Aussies have taken their foot off the pedal all summer...not surprising after an incredible 2023, playing PAK and WI this summer couldnt come at a better time. Playing at half rat power, swept PAK and lets be honest, will eventually sweep WI still.
