I don't think he intends to pull the umpire to the ground at all.
I think he's getting rag-dolled himself and grabs onto whatever he can for a bit of stability and it happens to be the umpire.
With that said, you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes, He's the one who started the push and shove when he had the first crack at the southerns player.
