Maybe she's trying to get sacked, people can benefit from having their employment terminated in some instances.

Sacked, abandonment or quit, they all incur a 13 week period of exile from Centrelink.

Employer terminates employment: severance payment.
Employee terminates employment: no severance payment.

Good to hear, generally if there's a working couple and something happens to the relationship it makes it damn near pointless working with one wage if the kids can't commute to and from school by themselves.

If you quit I think it’s 13 weeks until you are entitled to benefits

In regard to Newstart Allowance you only get the same waiting period as quitting for getting the sack if you get the sack because of misconduct.
Normal waiting period is one week which can be waived under exceptional circumstances.
Other things that can impact waiting periods are money you have, redundancy packages (both voluntary and non voluntary), etc.

Her name still appears on our sign in sheet, it's weird, it's like the elephant in the office that we aren't meant to notice or comment on.

I have encountered similar predicaments at work. An employee will vanish with no trace and their departure is shortly followed with a short email advising they have left, the reason behind this can’t be disclosed and a suitable farewell will be organised in due course (which generally is booked for the 15th of Never). We then refer to them as ‘Voldemolts’ as speaking of them again is frowned upon and raises the ire of management, so effectively they become ‘They Who Cannot Be Named’.

Not sure if he got out or they got in. I actually heard it happening but you always hear dog fights up here, more dogs than people
