Headland wouldnt exactly be the most trustworthy bloke going around. Im gonna reserve judgement until the tribunal tonight as theres been about 7 different versions of what was said going around.
Either way, Headlands reaction was ridiculous over something that was said thats obviously not the truth. Just makes him more of a target now in my opinion.

I'm not by any stretch saying it's acceptable, just wondering if it's that much worse than other things that have been said on the field in the last 100 years? (And I agree Wedgie, that the goalposts have shifted over the years and a bloke can't gain retribution as easily as before)
great point constance perm my thoughts exactly

honestly
just my opinion but I do not believe in retaliation EVER
it simply lowers you to the other persons poor values (If I had retaliated each time I have been villified in my life, I too would have been in major trouble)
best way to pee off tormenters is the old addage "just ignore them"
remember sticks n stones
now in no way do I think what was allegedly said was acceptable however sledging has been a part of the game for many years, sheesh how much more sanitary do we want to make this (former) great game of ours
p.s. we can not control others actions only our REACTION to them! get a grip peoples[/list]

Moral of the story - both Headland and Selwood are fu*kwits.
obviously not a parent Aerie?
No I'm not, but that's not the point. If someone says something that is obviously not true, would you start laying into them with punches or would you say something along the lines of "that's my daughter you're talking about, you're a disgrace..." or just ignore them.
As CP mentions, family insults are one of the oldest tricks in the book. Selwood wasn't doing any harm to his daughter, he was clearly just trying to get Headland to react the way he did. IF Selwood said that directly to his daughter or in anyway that a family member was getting effected, then fair enough.
I'm not in anyway saying what Selwood did was ok, it's not, but Headland's reaction showed his character as well.

A someone (who i knew quiet well) once told me that instead of my wife having the baby she should of got a coat hanger (the rest i wont put in but u can see where this is going) should i have just ignored it? i dont think so, people need to be acountable for what they say no matter where its said.
The problem with Barcelona is that I like fish and chips but they had to turn it into calamari and patatas

Selwood was way out of line, but Chris Connolly would have preferred Headland keep it under control if it's gonna rub him out for 5 weeks.
Tony Antrobus used to get targetted when he was at North (and maybe in the AFL too) because he always reacted.
Have to say again .... I don't condone what Selwood allegedy said because, if it's factual, it's a disgrace. Unfortunately tho that's not a defence Headland can use as far as I am aware.

There have been rare instances in the past where "extreme provocation" has been successfully used as a defence, and at times has seen sentences reduced and in some cases suspensions not given when it seemed a fait accompli - Craig Bradley in the AFL and Michael Aish in the SANFL are two that readily come to mind (although these examples had vastly tidier records than Headland)

If something like that could happen in this case we might end up at a fairer solution.

I cant believe you blokes are saying that he shouldnt have reacted to Selwood...the bloke allegedly said he has sex with his 6yo daughter and called her a slut...99% of the time you dont react to sledging but I think this is the exception, you cant let that one go through to the keeper....Im tipping a few of you blokes have never played the game...

couldnt agree more, just like when i am at work and some call's me name cause i kick them out 99% i let them go, the minute they something about my family or my race, then i react, mostly verbaly but if gets physical then it get physical. So i am not saying every comment should be meet with violence but if what selwood said was said then its all fair

I am not saying that he shouldn't have reacted. I am saying that, rightly or wrongly, the tribunal system says that the way he responded might cost him 5 games - which hurts Fremantle. If you were the coach what would you tell your players to do next time it happens? Park it for the sake of the team or stand up for yourself, get physical and then get suspended?
It's a very tough one Dutchy and easy for us to comment from the comfort of our desks. That's why I reckon if his penalty can be reduced and Selwood fined or something then maybe we are getting closer to the right answer.

I spoke to a mate in WA today who is pretty close to the Freo scene
My mate advised the following
It is ALLEGED
Headland has a tattoo on his arm with his daughters name and birth date, Selwood seeing the Tattoo allegedly said I have F##ked her, Headland thinking Selwood did not notice the birth date responded "she is my 6 year old daughter", to which Selwood allegedly responded "I know, she is a slut"
I am not sure if this has been released thru media outlets, but it comes from a pretty good This info comes from a pretty good source

I hope Headland get's off and they throw the book at Selwood
If it was me, I would make sure I square up, whether it is next time we play or three years down the track, I would not feel at peace until I had the opportunity to put him on his backside
what has happened at the Eagles, on drama after another, Gardiner, Cousins, Kerr, Selwood, Braun
was Woosha happy to turn a blind eye to these clutural issues while the side was wining

Is society/football becoming a little TOO sensitive.
Society/football has never put up with those sort of comments about one's 6yo daughter.
BUT one could agree that football has become TOO sensitive when it doesn't allow someone to thump a bloke for making such comments.
Agree 100% ... there is a line and if Selwood said that than he crossed it
Not much consolation for Freo or Headland tho if he is missing for 5 weeks
Obviously you don't have kids Mr66, or a daugher perhaps. If you do, you have a pretty relaxed attitude about it, so half your luck. If it were me I would've chased the mongrel out to the carpark to finish the job. Unfortunately for Freo, Headland's feelings on the matter are similar to mine.
Forget white line fever, that's taking gamemenship way too far.
As for having a relaxed attitude, yep you got me there.
I think there are far worse things that are done to people than there are said about them.
Like what happened today in Virginia or when our workplace lost a beloved colleague at the weekend.
They are only words.
"Stick and Stones may break my bones...." I hope everyone knows the rest.
Why would you get upset over something which obviously isn't true?

If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Pity he didn't get a real punch in then... and the guy who he lost 5 weeks for was laughing at him after the game. Yeah, wouldn't be worried at all, he came out a real winner.
