At this stage, cause is similar to the Tasman Bridge disaster in Hobart in the 70’s.

Was reported on the news over here that power to ship appeared to go out before it veered into the bridge and reports of a fire onboard the ship.Wedgie wrote:Crikey, the pilot of that cargo ship is going to be in a bit of strife!whufc wrote:Bridge struck down in Baltimore. The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River outside the Port of Baltimore threatens to disrupt shipping operations at a major US trade hub for autos, container traffic and international cargo.
Baltimore also has a cruise terminal. Last year, the port ranked first in the US for autos and light trucks, handling a record 850,000 vehicles. It was also the leading port for farming and construction machinery, as well as imported sugar and gypsum. It was second in the country for exporting coal.
Overall, Baltimore ranks as the 9th biggest US port for international cargo, handling a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion in 2023.
Its cruise terminal serves ships operated by Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. Cruises carrying more than 444,000 passengers departed from the port last year.
According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.

Re: Things that make you sad.
The vessel was able to alert authorities that it has lost power and steering, so the bridge was closed to traffic immediately before it collapsed. Unfortunately, there were still some vehicles on the bridge when it collapsed.
I’m stunned that the container vessel stopped on impact, the momentum of those vessels is usually massive due to their weight.
How unlucky were they that it hit one of the main supporting pylons.

Re: Things that make you sad.
Well, as they say all good things must come to an end.
After receiving two x 6 carton vouchers to go to U Brew It for my 40th in 2015 myself and a good mate have been there once a month for over 8 years trying over 50 different beers. We found out yesterday that the next brew we do ( we are bottling this afternoon ) in around 5 weeks will be the last, the operation is closing the doors and moving to a different model, one we're not on board with.
It's a sad day, no longer will I be drinking freshly brewed 6%+ beers at under $40 a carton.

Re: Things that make you sad.
They're moving the brew operations to the family property up in the hills, no more bottling station, kegs only and either pick up from there or delivery added.
I may look into this but a decent kegerator is $1300+

The process there was so easy, they'd brew and ferment we'd simply go once a month and take an hour to bottle 6 cartons.

Not once we became regulars, he was happy to do it for us. I'd just ring, tell him what to lay down and 14-16 days later we bottled.
Occasionally we'd get involved if we were playing around with the recipe.

But there's not much time involved doing it yourself.
Maybe 15mins putting it down
Then bottling, but once you do it at home you'd upgrade to kegs
Then you just put next kit in fermenter on top of the yeast cake at the bottom

Takes too long cleaning/sterilising everything.
Easier to open bar fridge and grab a beer

Was cleaning the fridge out a few weeks ago and there was all sorts of beer in there.
Some dirty bastard left me a 6 pack of non alcoholic beer!
