Re: Open Mike
We've never let him forget it. We keep reminding him of his sordid druggie past.
Another night he was driving back from Berri and sees these two blokes walking alongside the road, being a good country lad (he's from Crystal Brook), he pulls over and offers them a lift. He gets back to Loxton and the boys suggest offer him a few beers for being a good bloke. He accepts and they head back to his place to settle in. His favourite late-night snack was steak and veg, so he cooks some up for them as they knock off a beer. By four o'clock they are all pretty shickered. Anyway, there'd been all these cars going missing from around Loxton at the time. Finally the cops caught up with the miscreants, it turns out when Trav had picked them up at Booky Hill, they'd just dumped a car in the river. After they left his house, they'd gone around the corner and flogged another car to get home. We also refer to that night as 'the night of the robbers'.

Re: Open Mike
When my old man's cancer had become too far gone, my brother, sister and I had to sit with him while a team of about 14 surgeons, anaesthetists, doctors and counsellors were assembling in his room to discuss what was going to happen in the coming weeks.
They gave us an hour beforehand to just chat amongst ourselves where we just went over some funny anecdotes to lighten the moment, as a couple nurses were getting extra seats as the specialists were congregating dad turns and says to me
"Hey Col, how bout the time I taught you how to wank?" I shook my head is disbelief as I face palmed, then he blurts out.
"You liked it more when I let you use your own dick."
I actually felt sorry for everyone else in the room, they weren't used of that type of crap.

Re: Open Mike
I went to my first Kangaroo Island Cup back in '97.
There were no street parties until 4am like now, once both pubs, the Ozone & the Queenscliff shut - that was it. Nowhere else to go.
I'd gone back to our accomodation (about 500m) from the Main Street around 10-ish, then got my second wind a bit after midnight. Ventured back to town to find it empty - dead. Except for a couple of locals I distinctly remember drinking long necks out the front of the pub.
They passed some piss take comment about me being a clueless city slicker. I responded I turn by "showing you how it's done" and off with the kit.
T-shirt in one hand, shorts & undies in the other- only a pair of sneakers were worn. So I do this drunken streak up the main drag with these locals cheering & laughing. I turn the corner & there's headlights shining straight at me. I dodge the car & I'm off, I can here the driver yell out "Oi, get back here!" but I'm running back to where we were staying. It was a police car, I make it within 20m of where I'm staying & go arse up. Lying face down in the gravel (still starkers) the copper parks his front wheel an inch from my nose.
"Are you alright" he asked,
"Yeah mate" I replied,
"What are you doing?" he yelled,
"A streak, what's it look like" I laughed,
"You staying here?" as he pointed to my unit,
"Yep"
"Get the f#*k inside then"
That was it - got away with one I thought.
The following week a mate who did some business on the island came into the pub I drank in & handed me the KI Times newspaper.
In the police section between school being graffitied & pools deliberately being overflowed was the report that read;
DARING DISROBED DASH
Police are investigating the sighting of a disrobed male they chased south along Dauncey St in early hours of February 22nd. Police say the man had no distinguishing features, which they put down to the cold weather but showed good form over the 100m they pursued him.
This was stuck up at my workplace, my local & even sent to my parents & girlfriend at the time.

Love it.
I was part of a group that had a rather hilarious letter to the editor written about it as locals tried to solve the mystery of some petty thievery.
We pinned it up alongside the item that was stolen.

Haha nice.
We were on footy trip in Mildura maybe 10 years ago (fk I am old) and the place next door to where we stayed had these Greek style concrete pillars out the front.
Of course after a few beers one of the lads got up and pretended to be a Greek statue. So just as he goes into his best "the thinker" pose the cops come around the corner.
we all scattered leaving him up on the pillar but all they did was yell out the window "put your bloody clothes back on and keep the noise down" and drove off haha.

Good old Mildura, the single mother capital of Australia, the destination of many footy trips for some reason.

Decent bus trip away for most of the afl footballing world with a few decent pubs to go to.
My first ever footy trip was to port Lincoln when I was 18. Somehow I thought that $120 for a weekend would be enough to see me through. Fair to say I didn't eat much for the last couple of days and dogged one of the a graders by not chipping in on the cab to the airport.

EJ Whitten. Outstanding work, Mike Sheehan.
Feels like yesterday when he passed, remember watching the Footy Show as clear as day.
Some great footage- that lap of honour before the 95' SOO game will go down as my most vivid sporting moment.

Yeah I did too.
You can understand the choice he made at the time- but moving forward it would be tough on you mentally, knowing you never truly said goodbye.

I quite enjoyed the Jordan Bannister episode last night, being an umpire myself and not exactly being the cleanest player in the world I could relate to a lot of what he was saying, pretty harsh with what happened to his brother.

Have to agree with booney, mods wasn't the most interesting open mike. Too much of a shy country lad. You could kinda tell that he was seething about being dropped for the 98 grand final but he wasn't the sort of guy to tell you how he felt.

It was amazing to think he has 220 goals in his first 50 games of footy, and when he kicked 129 in 1993 that was his second year of footy!

He was leading goalkicker for Renmark in 1990. Three years later, he's leading golakicker for the AFL. Amazing He was a dead set freak.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep

No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

@bumcrack, probably, and @ronburgundy, maybe, will be able to tell you more. But from the stories I've heard, Tony and Rick, the brother you're probably referring to, were different players. Rick was fearsome and brutal - a man you did not f*** with. He was massive, a man mountain. There was also another brother, Kym, who was apparently very talented. I think they all played rep footy together - the stories are legendary. Tony, from my understanding, was the youngest.
I think all three played at Renmark in a flag year, which was a drawn grand final. Rick missed one of the matches. My memories a bit fuzzy on this - BC will definitely know.
