It is because neither date was chosen for any sort of accuracy, but rather to take over the dates of pre-existing non-Christian festivals and thus obliterate them - Christmas for the Roman Saturnalia, and Easter for older Jewish celebrations, and they thus followed the dating systems of those event to maintain the clash...

Given all the coins that have been minted over the years, how much money do you reckon is lying at the bottom of Adelaide drains?
