Should farewell matches be gifted?
Watching the 2nd half of the Port v Dees today, Cassisi was clearly gifted a farewell match after he was probably told he wasn't going to get another match after being dropped last week.
IMHO I don't believe matches should be gifted regardless of the player or career they've had ... ever.
Pick the best team for the match, not what matters in the sentimental stakes.

Re: Should farewell matches be gifted?
A couple of bad turnovers but that goes for everyone in the team today. Dom also did a lot to show why he is deserving a spot in our best 22, and still would be if his body hadn't let him down.

I'm absolutely against farewell matches being gifted, but I didn't think he was the worst player out there today. Gets a lot of very important touches or tackles that get overlooked. Smart player.

Mark Harvey and Tyson Edwards come to mind, plenty of others.

Re: Should farewell matches be gifted?
I am totally against gifted farewells. No way was Dom gifted that game-he earned it and deserved it.There were at least 4 others who played today who should consider retiring as well on that performance...
If you don’t like my words, don’t listen. If you don’t like my appearance, don’t look. If you don’t like my actions, turn your head; It’s as simple as that.

Port have gifted Mitchell a game all year and Dom has more talent in his big toe than him. I dont have a problem with him playing today, he still would make their best side

The Edwards game I remember. It was an absolute pearler from him, not sure if he ended up with the brownlow votes, but was definitely the crows best on.
But it should be a flat out no to farewell games. If you can't earn a spot in the side on form, there should be no game gifted. Especially if you're a side with something to fight for (port top four ambition).

Re: Should farewell matches be gifted?
I suspect the point is being missed. It's not whether that player in question is still good enough to earn their spot, it's whether they clearly have been told they're not in the best 22 and that they either are told to give it away or decide to retire.
Whether Cassisi is still good enough to go around is immaterial, clearly the coach doesn't think so whether it be age, form or injury.

Didnt Cassisi make the call?
I would think the coach would rather him play on but Dom genuinely believes his body is shot

I think it's fine.
Often these blokes have carried team mates in the past. I'm sure the favour can be returned for a farewell match.

Re: Should farewell matches be gifted?
I'm not a 'dom' fan, football or otherwise. I haven't thought he's been in their best 22 for a long while. T Logan is just one bloke who can feel hard-done-by not to get a game ahead of him. As for calling his farewell game against a bottom 4 club at home? I thought it was about as brave as the footy I've seen him play.
I'm not looking for a spat, but everyone has a player that for one reason or another they dislike , and he's mine (and j hunt). I stayed away from the port thread so as not to interrupt the love affair going on, but good on you dedja for opening this one so I could have my two cents!

I'm 50/50 with this one in general [but each case is differing]
It can be argued that either :
A gift player is a passenger
A gift player is inspirational
They say the end justifies the means
With Cassisigate
Fortunately Port won and the selection is more or less justified
But if Port gets rolled by the struggling Melbourne , then there is more of a negative reaction

Re: Should farewell matches be gifted?
as i said in the port thread, either he is in the best 22 and he plays the rest of the year, or he isnt, in which case he was gifted a game.
saying he is fit enough for a single game but not for the rest of the season doesnt make sense

Is it an insult to the team they are playing against?
If it was the hawks or swans would he of played?
