Wasn't it more a case of "if you don't let us in we will kill your comp. We will take your sponsorship $$$ and you media exposure. But if you do let us in we will be your good buddies and give you $50k a year and 4,000 fans a week and give you lots if media exposure."
On that basis it was either death or survival on their terms. It just depended whether you believed it or not. 6 clubs did, 2 didn't.

Why are the recent changes 'necessary', or in moving with the times?
Before you answer, please consider that:
A) Many people went to the Sanfl because they wanted a couple of hours of football a week amongst the AFL saturation.
B) Where are the eight legit clubs going to recruit fans from now on?
C) 36,000 people were at the Sanfl Grand Final last year, and obviously didn't lament the lack of AFL involvement.
D) The SANFL moved with the times when it allowed the formation of the Adelaide Crows and the ascension of Port Adelaide to the national league.
Yep, the latest AFL fad.....aren't we lucky to have them.
Going by this you're still holding onto your Crocs.

Re: The Passion for SANFL Football is Gone !!
Great topic.
For some reason SANFL is not interesting to me anymore.
Its lost in some financial vacuum.
Saw it coming a few years back.
Gone are the BBQ's in the Kmart car park of West Lakes come finals..
Where we watched the trees grow from nothing to shade bearers.
Watching our youth kick a footy hopelessly to each other, dodging the bus with adult supervision.
Tradition has gone.
Will we bbq at Adelaide..?

Correct! Just glad we no longer have to carry the burden of "ruining the competition" nowadays
A couple of other clubs now have that mantle well and truly covered
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

Re: The Passion for SANFL Football is Gone !!
My passion for the SANFL and the Bays hasn't waned this year but my passion for footy has. The reserves teams have reinforced in my mind how far removed the AFL competition is from the sport I used to love: Australian Football. I watch AFL with only a passing interest now. Whereas in the past I'd know the ladder and finals permutation come rd 21-22 this year NFI. Used to watch AFL 360 regularly no longer, the cricket from England in the last month has been a godsend and by the time the repeat of 360 comes on at 9:30 I'm usually watching Mike and Mike in the morning.
I do like watch the exploits of ex-bays players and coaches in the AFL and I get enjoyment in them doing well but the industry that it is, is an anathema to me. It has even seen me having less interest in umpiring in the SFL and GSFL so my interest in the lower leagues has even waned.
In summary this year has made me love the SANFL just as much but love the AFL and it's associated industry even less.

Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I think tomorrow's crowd could help settle this discussion. Whilst individuals will have their own view if they do break the 15,000 that's being anticipated then statistically it's fair to say the passion still lives for many fans.

Re: The Passion for SANFL Football is Gone !!
There's a big Adelaide Oval novelty factor with this finals series though. SANFL supporters have always treated AO as a home away from home with minor rounds, Anzac Day games, State games and finals played there for years continuously.

Would be great to get 15K, but unfortunately the Eagles and South are 2 of the lowest supported clubs in the league.
Hopefully they come out in force tomorrow.

Plus the novelty of a new timeslot (which i think is worth a crack by the SANFL)
The real story will be told in the next 3-5 years!
The interesting statistic will be where club memberships were at this year.
Unfortunately bandwagoners who only rock up to finals at AO aren't the ones who help clubs survive financially when times aren't so great on field
