Vale - Martin Crowe
New Zealand cricket legend Martin Crowe has died at the age of 53.
The former Black Caps captain had been battling cancer since 2012. He went into remission a year later but in September 2014 he suffered a relapse of lymphoma and his condition worsened considerably in recent months.
Crowe spent 14 years in the national team, during which time he established himself as one of the world's finest batsmen.
In 1991 he was named New Zealand sportsman of the year and awarded an MBE for services to cricket. He was later inducted into the New Zealand sports hall of fame.
In 2015 he was inducted in the ICC hall of fame and received an emotional standing ovation at Eden Park during the World Cup pool match between the Black Caps and Australia.
Tributes began to flow on social media when the news broke on Thursday, for a player regarded as gentleman on and off the cricket pitch.

Re: Vale - Martin Crowe
I remember him and Andrew Jones smash us around Adelaide Oval circa 1988.
Such a brilliant player.
Taken way too young.

Re: Vale - Martin Crowe
RIP Martin Crowe. The best Kiwi batsman I have seen. Williamson may surpass him statistically but Crowe was a great batsman to watch where Williamson can be quite dour at times.

A brilliant batsman, silky smooth and absolute class, but could be brutal when it took his fancy. He was also a fierce competitor and had plenty of shit in him. Would've loved to have been able to say he played for Australia.

Re: Vale - Martin Crowe
Richard Hadlee might have been the champion of New Zealand cricket, but Martin Crowe was their heart and soul. I think in many ways the current side still has his fingerprints all over it. New Zealand cricket has lost a lot more than an ex captain.
