Re: State of the game
You believe a penalty will stamp out a frustrated male from brawling out a few punches in a tussle inside a muscle bound adrenaline loaded squabble?
You believe these punching prone dudes believe there currently is no penalty so they believe its ok to punch at the moment?
And your solution is to minutely enhance a penalty which already exists?
He punched my arm... he deserves a week for that!
My point is youll never stamp out punches totally

Marbles, it's the 'punching to get away from a tagger' that's the issue. The 'punching away of the arm across you' might be ok but strking to the body should be eliminated from the game. Too many times blokes have punched blokes in the stomach and run off and got a fine.

Re: State of the game
Caro made an excellent point on Monday night on Classified.
It's not the look of the game that is the problem, it's not congestion, it's not scoring or lack thereof, it's 3 clubs, Carlton, Gold Coast and St Kilda being a rabble on the field and not much better off it that should be the first thing the AFL worry about and invest time and money to fix.
Commented that all three clubs could be in line for a priority pick at this years draft.

Absolute disgrace if the Saints get a priority pick.Booney wrote:Caro made an excellent point on Monday night on Classified.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wont their always be 3 clubs down at the bottom of the ladder.
Says everything about the mickey mouse nature of the competition that they would entertain the idea of AFL invention even further to make a team 'better'.

There is a big gap from bottom 3 to those just a few spots higher.
Those bottom 3, for the most part are uncompetitive.
The AFL ideally want every match to be a 50-50.
But the AFL, with 18 teams, no depth leads to these situations.

Having St Kilda even in a conversation about priority picks is insane in the membrane

Yep, but you want the gap between top and bottom to be as small as possible.

So people want to artificially manufacture the competition between teams?
Seems pretty dodgy to me.
Whats the solution to that? Have the league take over management of clubs?
Enforce league determined trades?
Alter the scoring system? (Eg. A Carlton goal is worth 12 points.)
How about everyone plays by the same rules, and their position on the ladder is determined by their win/loss and percentage.

They already alter the fixtures to make it easier for struggling clubs. Add this to giving them the best available players in the land, and then giving them the next best too for shits and gigs...what more do they need? How about auditing the way they run a f..king football department and making them actually be accountable for their work rather than rely on the AFL to hand them the best talent and soft draws to fix their f..k ups.

Make them accountable, in what way? The AFL already have Lethlean at St Kilda, Evans at Gold Coast, they send their people to the clubs in need.
I'm not advocating the priority picks by the way, just discussing what seems to be on the agenda at AFL house.

Not sure of the answer Boon but it's frustrating that these clubs get handed the best players and the softest draws, and like you said the best front office talent straight from the AFL, and it still happens. So they just send them more...

Re: State of the game
The AFL might as well take over clubs if they want to blatantly 'give them' success.
How long until we see 'Handicaps' in AFL football. Carlton start with a line of +30, that will make games exciting ha.
Surely it's getting to a point where it's that manufactured that it is the oval shaped balls version of the WWE.
Personally I just cant get my head around it all.

Frustrating? Sure is, but it's either that or we have the same 3 or 4 clubs vying for the premiership every year. I now what I'd rather.

True. And Leigh Montagna mentioned on Melbourne radio that having starting positions could make the blowouts worse. The reason for bringing them in is to lower congestion, which increases scoring, which will cause bigger margins between the good and the bad teams.
Not sure the AFL really wants to do this.... but they will because they're looking at the positives rather than the consequences of bringing these rules in, as they continue to do year in year out.
The NRL has the bottom team on 6 wins (from memory) and the Eels (my mob) beat a top 6 team 40-6 on the weekend. I can't see that happening with Carlton, St Kilda or Gold Coast any time soon.
