Tax on alcohol is possibly the biggest joke perpetrated by the former Howard government.

When the GST was brought in it was supposed to replace all those hidden sales taxes and whatnot on everything. Since luxury items like BEER and TABS already had the ar$e taxed off them, they should have tumbled in price when the GST took effect.

The government of the day got around this by increasing the alcohol excise. The hair-splitting spin-doctors would claim that excise ain't a tax. To which I say: bulldust. A turd by any other name smells just as rotten. The government LIED to us about their GST.

If we had gotten the GST John Hewson proposed the tax and excise on petrol would have gone too, and we would be better off now because lower transport costs would have helped keep prices down. Ideally, funding that would have included there being no exemptions from the GST, which would have kept it all simple. I don't really like the GST - it is a pain doing BAS returns. Still it is possible to accept something you don't like if it gives a good overall result.

The alcohol excise has been seen by both parties as a health measure aimed at trying to get people to moderate their habits but I agree - it won't work. Anyone can brew their own beer or run up their own still. I know a doctor in Adelaide who makes a very nice Rum at home - one of the best I've had. Mind you I've never seen him drunk or even mildly tipsy - use and enjoyment doesn't always mean no control.

I vaguely remember Mark Latham at one time, prior to his getting the leadership for a while, arguing in favour of Death Duties or Inheritance Taxes, or maybe both.

How about a wowser tax for each time Psyber craps on about how bad alcohol is. I can see the budget surplus now.

In the Uk we do have a death tax. It's called Death Duty. We also have inheritance tax.

Cigggies are now $12.00 a packet
Petrol is now $2.70 per litre
Sales Tax is 17 and 1/2% on every thing you buy
Beer is now around $7.00 although style beers like beck's, bud etc are around $6.50 per 275ml bottle.
Stamp duty on buying a house is 3% of the value and with the average house price in the UK up around $270k that's another $8,000 for tax
Personal tax is 22% for the 1st $73,000 then it's up to 40%
Health tax is 8% of your gross wage
Corporation tax is 19% for the 1st $220k then it's 22%
TV tax is $280 a year
Local govt tax is around $3,500 a year
Water tax is around $500 a year
Road tax is $360 a year and there is a supplimentary tax of around $120 if your car is older than 3 years.
Tax on all Gas and Electric is 5% which equates to around $500 a year

I could go on..............

LONDON (Reuters) - London's new mayor Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday that alcohol would be banned on the capital's transport system from next month.

The ban on drinking from or carrying open alcohol containers was a key manifesto pledge of Johnson, the irreverent journalist-turned MP who defeated incumbent Ken Livingstone in a closely fought election last week.

The ban, which will apply to buses, underground trains, trams and stations, will come into force on June 1.

"I'm determined to improve the safety and security of public transport in London and create a better environment for the millions of Londoners who rely on it," Johnson said.

"I firmly believe that if we drive out so called minor crime then we will be able to get a firm grip on more serious crime."

Tackling crime, particularly serious violence among young people, was one of the main planks of Johnson's election campaign and he has already vowed to put it at the forefront of his mayoralty.

Posters informing travellers of the ban will now go on display.

"Public drinking and the behaviour sometimes associated with it can, and does, deeply affect people's ability to enjoy public spaces," said Don Shenker, Chief Executive of Alcohol Concern.

"Taking a firm approach to public drinking in this way sends a strong message that public drunkenness is socially unacceptable and will support both the public and transport staff."
