That does look like a very tough draw to start with. 6 of the top 8 along with 9th and 10th from 2015.

Was always going to be a bit tough after finishing top 6.

Turns out that the missing link wasn't Ryder, but rather a soft draw.

Standard second half of the year where we tank for a top 10 draft pick.

Geelong and Port the new flag favourites with those draws, both have 17 wins without counting any 50/50 games

That is disgusting! PLUS they only trsvel interstate 5 times all year and 1 of those is a sold home game in Cairns...

So 4 away interstate matches. As pointed out Freo away in last round is offset by the bye and the Sydney @ SCG match is after a bye...

Lock us in for a home prelim! (@ Etihad please)

Should be the simplest thing for the AFL to organize.
23 rounds:
9 rounds - each team gets one Friday night game, not necessarily a home game. Each team deserves at least one for being part of comp.
8 rounds - the eight finalists from the previous year play two games against other finalists.
6 rounds - "big six" in Melbourne play two games against other "big six" teams. Perhaps this could be reviewed every three years with performance and crowds being weighted.

So for next year:
5: Hawthorn, Richmond
3: West Coast, North Melbourne, Freo, Adelaide, Bulldogs, Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, Sydney, Geelong
1: Port, GWS, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Melbourne, St Kilda
* Making the presumption that Ess, Carl & Rich and big clubs, and NM aren't, which could change end of next year given Carlton and NM's performances.
Make the finals and the "big six" Coll, Ess, etc would be guaranteed five games, smaller Vic and all non-Vic clubs three games.
Miss the finals, the "big six" would still get three, the others one.

The reason this won't happen is ch7 want a return on their 1.7 billion or whatever it is.

Got no issue with them scheduling the bigger clubs that night, but what we want more than anything is a good game of footy.

Imo if it is most likely going to be the match of the round then it should be Friday (with a little tweaking)

Friday is the night that almost everyone watches regardless of their own team participating

If they are going to mandate that what they suspect will be the match of the round is to be made the Friday night game, then that's fine, even if they introduce flexible scheduling and plan them every 8 weeks. Would have meant Port would have got 5-6 games this year.

This notion perpetuated in the media that Port and Adelaide get to be "on the big stage" playing one or two Friday night games, is condescending to our footy state (and I don't follow either side).

AFL don't want too many northern teams involved in Friday night footy because of rugby league telecasts. How will they go in a couple years time when rugby league is potentially on FTA Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, Sunday arvos, and maybe even Saturday twilight?

Port Adelaide seemed very content with their schedule when I heard KT on the radio last night.
In fact, never, ever have I heard a representative of an SA-based club so effusive about their program as I heard last night.

The whole fixture thing is becoming a joke, especially when the AFL continues to talk about integrity.
The differences between the difficulties in draws of some teams from year to year is ridiculous, and that's not just because Port have an easier draw next year, had some sympathy for them with their draw this year.
How hard is it? Top 9 teams play three double-up games against other top 9 sides, two against bottom 9, and vice versa.

It's very favorable in terms of our "double up teams" that we play twice, Adelaide ( obviously ) GWS, Brisbane, Melbourne and Richmond.

I don't think KT would have been in a spot to moan about two Sunday home twilight games against GWS and Brisbane which will be terrible, in a commercial sense, given we have Essendon Friday night round 2 and then in the midseason break we get Richmond Friday night at home and the following Thursday Hawthorn at home. All big telecast, home attendance matches.

We do however have two lots of back to back travel in the last 7 weeks of the year and we also have 5 6 day breaks with 3 of them in a row.

Over all, he'd be very happy with it from a commercial stand point. Two shitty one's traded off for 3 big ones.

The thing that gets me is how much harder north and the crows draw is compared with Geelong and port, who didn't finish that much further behind

Time for the 17-5 system I think

At least you get to play all your home games at home, plus 2 away games at home.
Geelong get to kick off the season with a home game against Hawthorn at Hawthorn's home ground.

North get 13 games at Etihad, Crows get 12 at AO but Geelong get 8 at Cat Park
