Pretty shit really, the timing is poor - it's been on the table and all but locked away since late last year.. now on the eve of the season its squashed.

It's a shit position for the club(s) and for those players who are now impacted.

Yeah i concur with this. Its actually a really sh@t position for a lot of people across the journey who have been a big part of that club.

As a former St. Paul's College Alumni i always hoped they did well even though i never actually played for them. A lot of proud history and some great names who have been a part of that club since its inception.

Names like Antenucci, Altamura, Goal kicking Centurion Ivan Novosel, Medal Winner Locky Kennett and the list goes on and on. The club has produced some very good players, SANFL coaches and football administrators. Most of all i feel for the Big Moose who the bar is named after. 300 games, ran the Auskick, Coached the Juniors, marked the lines, attended every meeting and worked tirelessly all to see it disappear. This is a club that had 2 Senior teams and at times hundreds of Juniors.

Its never good to see a club shut its doors and its a sad time for anyone who has been involved at the club. Hopefully no players are left stranded but there are always clubs looking for more players so hopefully evryone can still get a kick and a catch.

Didn't get their governance done in time. Meaning the implementation and flow on effects couldn't be worked through.

This sort of thing really does need to be sorted and planned for a season in advance to ensure the league - and other clubs - can also plan accordingly

Hard to get much of a read on teams in trial games - and not really my focus (the oppo) unless i'm going out to watch them.. but..

Smithfield Friday night got over the top of Ingle Farm. 6 period game broken into two squads, First period Smithfield jumped out the blocks and banged on a few goals. Second period much more even, and Ingle Farm closed the gap to a couple goals. Third period Smithfield replaced most their squad with the A grade and they blew Farmers away with 7 unanswered goals - some came very quickly. Think final score was 13.9 to 4.1.

Fourth period, again the Farmers started slow - not sure if its coz the warm up / pre-game prep, or the 6 period games make it a little akward, or that a lot of the Smithies blokes had already got a bit of a run in early.

Smithies jumped out again - 4.3 to 2.4 in the first - a very good goal from Bailey Thompson the highlight, whilst Hippy Wanganeen was too big + strong for our (regular B grade) fullback. Scott McIntyre down from Pt Pirie was also a prescence.

Fifth period and Farmers found some flow, tidied up our contest game, and frankly dominated - although very wasteful inside F50 - kicking 1.4 for the quarter, a couple out on the full and a few direct turnovers. Smithfield snatched a late one. 5.3 to 3.8.

Last period and Farmers continued to pile on the pressure, but again, inability to convert F50 entries killed the side. Kicked a goal, missed a couple more. One of our U17s had a setshot to put Smithfield away but failed.

Hippy managed to get on the end of a free kick late in the game (maybe 3min left?) and resulting 50m penalty (guessing must've been 2x 25m? still unsure what for), put him on the goal line and iced the game.

Smithfield added another one at the end to finish roughly 2 goals the better.

Takeaways on Smithfield:
They are confident of giving D7 a shake - i'm not convinced.
Run hard forward, have some reasonable leg speed on the outside, but don't defend.
Terribly unfit - last two quarters they looked gassed.
Hippy is a good forward if they can get him delivery this year - but also rumours he's not sticking around.
Traesen is a very good ruck.
Depth through B grade is reasonable which should hold them in good stead.. if they are willing to go up when needed.

I wont make excuses for Ingle Farm or our cattle on the night, not interested in the result, just a chance to look at some kids, and reward some blokes who have put in work over pre-season.

Smithfield probably 10 goals off the pace of West Croydon comparing the 2 trials.

Lights are dog shit though, and combined with two sides with striped guernseys, made it almost impossible to see / tell who was who.

Yeah, probably the same globes from when they were first installed, were the best getting around at that stage but watching the Virginia trial last season made them seem very ordinary now.

95 I reckon. We were going to play a lot of night games that season, we played Elizabeth in round 1 under lights and they beat us so we didn't play any more that season.

CDFC used to use it for junior night games, they were actually quite decent back in the day, the benchmark was low though as no one else had more than two on their clubhouse side, except Salisbury, they used to run a midweek knockout night comp throughout the normal season.

Thats the whole D7 comp from what I saw last year, if any team could come up with a good defensive method they would make the GF.

Smithfield would have to improve dramatically in personnel to move up the ladder, I hope they are more competitive, they seem like a club trying bloody hard to improve.

I feel Smithfield's success will be measured by numbers on the track, I don't doubt they have plenty of players with ability however if you don't have the tank to go with it, therein lies your problem.

I see them finishing midtable in a very tight comp.

I would have thought the gap between smithfield and WC would have been bigger with Doolan, Johnston and the Rigneys back at Hanson Road?

Hackam and CU also sound like they are in for a big year if their recent interviews on Adelaide Footy are anything to go by. Should be a very tight comp!

Add Lutheran, Mitchell Park and Brahma Lodge.. this shapes as the tightest D7 in a long time, if not ever!

Yeah it's seemingly the most even comp we've had for a quite a while down here.

Doubt there's a really dominant "easy div 7 flag" northern club this year albeit Central United will be strong.

There's also no "really struggling to just field two teams" clubs either.

Should be fun!

95 I reckon. We were going to play a lot of night games that season, we played Elizabeth in round 1 under lights and they beat us so we didn't play any more that season.


95 was the year the NMFL joined the SAAFL our C & D Grade (Broadview) played in A5 North & A5 North Reserves against the former CDFA clubs.

We played Elizabeth Round 1 at their round and got smashed. They tried to charge us an entrance fee, and we told them to shove where the sun doesn't shine you aren't in the NMFL any more.

Grand Final that year at Salisbury

Smithfield knocked off Elizabeth who were undefeated all year in the A Grade and we knocked off North Pines in the GF after beating Elizabeth in the Second Semi and watched go out in straight sets the following week to North Pines.
