I’m hearing you, no parents or grandparents by the age of 20

Oh shit, must have been very tough internally for both of you.

I guess if I knew what is was like having the alternative it might seem that way, but it was just a way of life for me.

Losing Dad was f..ked up though so Mum had to raise three teenagers without her parents around or her deceased husbands parents around or his family as he migrated from Poland many many years prior by himself.

What it did mean though that my brother, sister and I were extremely independent kids because we had too be otherwise we would never go anywhere or do anything.

Yes, I can tell it strengthened despite it only being via here, my parents separated when I was 15, dad moved a fair way away and mum was a mess for a while to the point where she wouldn't leave her spot for days on end, I had to tend to my 7 year old sister for a few years after that, it's a drop in the ocean in comparison but it certainly opened my eyes up to what lies ahead.

I've made mistake after mistake in my life, I try to learn from them, I think dad's passing was the real "line in the sand" for me, despite being 39 at the time it certainly threw life into perspective and made me chase goals, not just visualise them.

I agree MW 100%. Similar situations.

My mum died suddenly when I was 5, three brothers and two sisters in a poor area up north . My dad worked his guts out for us kids, long long hours. I was very lucky that my brothers and sisters, I am the youngest, looked after me. My oldest brother is the most sensational person I will ever meet. Always looked after me, just did everything for me and probably still does.

Dad died of cancer just before my 20th Birthday
Never even knew 2 of my grandparents, other 2 passed away in my teens

Happened a long time ago but made me grow up very quickly which is why I’m pretty level headed at most times. I appreciate what I have not what I don’t .

He lived in the War Veterans Home at Myrtle Bank, taught me how to play snooker/pool/billiards on full size tables, carpet/lawn bowls, cribbage, chess and I proudly have and use his pool cue and his walking stick sits next to the fire place.

RIP Pop.

What can you say. Kids are natural. kills me when you see the crap that some of them get dealt due to others.

I would have liked the post but that seemed disrespectful.
