Agreed, was more a comment about how many he'd need to get if we were to get close to the target.

Thoughts on South Africa's racial quota selection policy?

I didn't realise it was now so full on until listening to the radio today. For an average period of a year in all 3 formats, there needs to be at least 6 of the 11 players non-white and 2 of those must be black African.

I guess if it gets the majority of the population involved in professional sport (it's for other sports too) it will be a good in the long term, but too bad if that white guy is best XI but can't get picked because of the colour of his skin.

For as strict as their policy is, I can't think of too many who are selected and don't deserve to be.

Hasn't been this way since they rejoined test ranks? I could be wrong but I thought it was. I remember reading about Makhaya Ntini only getting a game under this policy, I can't remember who he was keeping out of the side but one would think Ntini more than held his own and turned in to a very good South Afican bowler. Well I rated him anyway.

Potential to be 0/150 off 12 overs or 2/10 off 8 with that combo. I'm a bit old fashioned in cricket, I believe you have to have a 'Rock' at the top of the order. Dravid and to a lesser extent Langer, Cook and Rogers type, but not quite Boycott if you get what I mean.

Agreed, but who? ( Don't say S.Marsh )

I'll probably get screamed down for this but if it's an opening position Australia need it would be Klinger for mine. I rate the guy I always have but being the wrong side 30 will always go against you.

Is Lehmans job on the line

Absolutely love the bloke but his tenor as Australia coach has hardly been a success

If he wasn't such a popular figure amongst the average punter I reckon there would a lot more people calling for his head

Bancroft is the man if you want a steady no frills opener.
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

I tend to agree with Bancroft but his First Class average is only 37

The reason I went Maddinson is he also bowls some left arm offies. We need an extra batsman in the side, that means we can get Mitch Marsh out and pick 4 bowlers and then someone has to chip in with some overs. Problem with that is Nevill stays at 7 and he's not a Test match #7. He needs to be at 8, but none of the bowlers can get in front of him at 7. With Maddinson and Head in the side you could get some overs out of both of them.

Starc
Hazlewood
Sayers
Lyon
Maddinson / Head

6 batters, 4 bowlers, 2 batsman who can get through some overs. We have no all rounders to play at 6 so someone in the top order has to chuck down a few from time to time.

Could be, especially with Langer/Dizzy waiting in the wings. Pressure will start to mount .

However, how much blame can go on the coach if the players are not good enough?

Pretty short shelf life for international cricket coaches I reckon. 3 forms of the game to cover, which means about 40 blokes rotating through squads, unprecedented travel, not a position that you can hold for long IMO.

While Lehmann is the fall guy the selectors must be held to account and they aren't, who evaluates their performances? The continued selection of M.Marsh and Siddle is baffling.

What I don't get is why the selectors stuff some players around but give others such a long chance to prove themselves.

They stuffed around Burns after the India series 2 years ago by not taking him to the Ashes, then stuffed around Bancroft by picking him at exactly the right time for the Bangladesh series, but then left him out of last years summer, ironically for Burns. Bancroft has generally been average since.

All the while Mitch Marsh has had a free pass.

Up until last summer, Bancroft had an unbelievably good record in his first innings of a game, but ordinary in the second. Not sure how much that balance has shifted over the last season, but overall he has made some big runs as an opener, should have been in the test team this time last year (and I like Burns) and his spot, based on performances, would have been more justified than either Marsh brother.

A bit of a long shot, but Kurt Patterson is a batsman who has been very consistent for the last couple of years for NSW. You've got to be pretty good to get picked for NSW and given his solid FC record they could do worse than give him a go...
