Yep, although would again get messy if the third team knocks off the first. If it just went by end-of-minor round positions, then 2nd and 3rd might play each other after both having the week off. If third assumed the ranking of first, then it negatively affects the 2nd team who would have to paly the first. If 2nd assumed the ranking of first, then the first week finals again would be repeated in the prelims. No perfect system except for the final 5!!

Ok glad we sorted that out, as is will suffice then. Now back on topic How good was Clarko on the couch, I could listen to him all day. I would say Lake will get another contract and just be used as needed for next year. Can he be rookie listed? I reckon we have one or two going through knee recons that can go on long term injury list to allow Lake to play.

So if the Hawks were good enough they'd have won on Subiaco. They weren't though. They had to wait for the Eagles to come to their home ground. Really you should say, if a team from outside Victoria is good they can win anywhere, but a Victorian club only needs to be good enough to win in its home state, and in some cases its home ground.
And if West Coast were good enough they would have won the GF. They weren't though. BTW Hawks did win at Subiaco, they beat the top side there in the preliminary final. This game could have been played anywhere & I reckon Hawthorn would have won.

I agree with you. Hawthorn made 2 trips to perth and played and extra game and in 30 degree heat they were too good.

First, thanks for answering one of the questions I have been putting out. In your opinion Hawthorn would have won the grand final wherever it was played. However, they were denied the chance to prove it, so we'll never know. Finishing higher on the ladder than your grand final opponent, and winning all other finals should cancel out the need "to win wherever it is played". This is the second year in the row Hawthorn have benefited from the automatic home grand final system. Discussing this obvious discrepancy is a taboo it seems.
Second, Hawthorn beat a disappointing Fremantle at Subiaco, which almost dropped their previous match at home to a very undermanned Sydney side. But when the Hawks met West Coast in Perth they were so badly brushed up that most commentators were saying that was the end of them. You cannot measure the Eagles by weighing the Dockers. But both Hawthorn and West Coast were just as bad playing on the other's home deck.
Third, a lot of posters are saying how great Hawthorn is having to travel to Perth, twice. Those same posters are refusing to even discuss the advantage Hawthorn would have had playing the grand final at home. They can't have it both ways.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail 1915, 1919, 1926, 1932, 1940, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1976, 2002, 2016, 2017

Only the dumb ones. Go back to the 1st week of finals thread & after they lost to West Coast I said Hawthorn are still the team to beat. Hawthorn made the dockers look disappointing in the prelim, just as they made West Coast look disappointing in the GF.
All this crap about how much of an advantage it is to play finals at your home venue must make the Crows 1998 flag the greatest of all. They had to travel interstate 4 weeks in a row & all games were against opposition who finished higher than them.

West Coast win in 92/94/06 and lost in 91/05/15
Sydney win in 05/12 and lost in 96/06/14
Brisbane win in 01/02/03 and lose in 04
Port win in 04 and lose in 07
Adelaide win in 97/98
Fremantle lose in 13
So since 1991 there has been 50 Grand Finalists ( excluding the replayed game ) and there has been 20 non-Victorian teams in that 50.
