Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
Excuse my ignorance but how does electrification of trains help an area?
In light of the recent issues on the soutnern line wouldnt it be the opposite?
The only benefit I could see is speed but the tracks probably prevent the electric trains going faster than a diesels max speed anyway?

It's a train ride whether its electrified or diesel. The only issue is disruptions when they have an issue but from memory they had breakdowns with diesel trains also.
Not sure what the issue is and I am not reading back to find out

Want to be a lot cheaper to run costing hundreds of millions of dollars to change over.
In fact these electrified trains better be shitting out hundred dollar bills.
I catch a diesel train once a week. Id rather them put on an extra carriage than electrify the bloody thing.

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
Cheaper to run and maintain, more efficient, faster as they can accelerate faster, quieter, less pollution.
Not to mention we are basically the only western city that still uses diesel railcars for suburban rail

Didn't I just list 6 reasons why electric trains are better? Or am I misunderstanding your question?
This article mentions 20% less running costs and higher patronage too

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
Most importantly for folks who use the Gawler line, the trip into the city will become much quicker. Shortening travel times are pretty important when it can take an hour or more to get into the city.
By developing new infrastructure, there is the possibility of increased jobs for the northern suburbs - a significant issue for this area, even without the impending closure of Holden.
A better, more efficient train service will see developers opening up some of the land along the train line that is currently lying dormant, thus producing more employment opportunities in the development of housing, plus opening up new business/employment opportunities once people start residing in the area.
Currently, the train line's electrification is funded to Salisbury. What will happen to people going further north than Salisbury when the electrification kicks in and the remainder of the track is not electrified?

Yeah Im sure they'll appreciate that 5 seconds they save from the better acceleration when the entire line shuts down (efficiently) like the Noarlunga line did. Will make a big difference to their lifestyles. Massive issue.
How will it work when the Seaford line relies on one part which doesnt have a replacement anywhere in the world. Share it?
As said before, as a weekly user of the service I'd much prefer an extra carriage thrown on and get where Im going 2 seconds later.
Even better, spend the money on Main North Rd. What a nightmare it is. The train is fine.

C'mon nothing wrong with the 55 min all stops run from North Gawler station to the City (save for the racecourse stop)
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Whats wrong with it and how would you be better off with it being electrified taking into account electrification doesnt alter the timetable and would make the line reliant on one part that has no replacement in the world?
As I said my only gripe is more carriages arent put on, electrifying them would make that possibility even more unlikely.

that is my single biggest problem with public transport. they dont put enough services on. i get it that sometimes there will be more people than seats, but it now seems to be the norm that i stand the entire time im on the bus. its frigging rediculous how they expect people to be crammed in all the time. (and dont get me started on the lack of legroom between the seats when i do get to sit down, im only 6 foot 2 and i just dont fit, my legs are too long) and it cant be safe, what happens to all those standing people on the bus when some dickhead runs a red light and the bus hits them? its a disaster waiting to happen.
they bang on about reducing cars in the cbd, and how to reduce them with car park taxes and other disincentives, when what they should be doing is giving people an incentive to use public transport. improve the service, more of them, more regularly, and as wedgie said, more capacity. the old carrot and the stick, but sadly the government just seems to want to use the stick and keep the carrots for themselves
