Re: 2024 AFL Silly Season
Richmond now have 1, 10,11,18, 20, 24, 51, 61, 70, 76
And will add 6 and 23 for Rioli.
And will add 6 and 23 for Rioli.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.
If you want to go far, go together.

With lots of academy and f/son picks next year in a weaker draft it's likely that pick would be in the late teens perhaps early 20's and as such wouldn't be valued too highly. If the 2025 draft is weak and compromised and 2027 will see the first of Tasmania's picks we've got this year and 2026 to get some youth into the club.
With Lukosius and Richards coming in, two players we were after along with 13, 29, 36 and 50 when we only had 39 and 58 is sound list management.
We'll turn 36 and 50 into something in the 20's and where we had nothing inside 30 we'll have 3. This years draft from 10-30 is rated highly and very even meaning we're every chance to get someone we really want.
Cut back the layers and we've played the longer game. Be stronger with Houston in 2025 and compromise the list going forward to keep moving.
Whilst there's a certain degree of schadenfreude watching all this unfold over the last 24 hours the above is the reality of looking forward next season and beyond.
You had a player who wants to go home and if he stayed whilst publicly he'd say the right things the reality is mentally he isn't "all in" at Port, getting him out now while he has maximum currency is the better option.
As Booney says if they can get 36 and 50 into something in the top 30 that is a win too compared to what they were looking at in November last year when they basically traded out this years picks to get the two players in last years draft after giving up this years 1st rounder (IIRC) for JHF.
In many ways Port had to do this trade.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Re: 2024 AFL Silly Season
Help me understand.
Why would a team trade a top 30 pick for 36 and 50???
A top 30 pick in a deep draft could be pretty decent, at 36 and 50 realistically it's just diamonds in the rough type stuff.
I dont understand the points scenario, but could that be at play.

Benny Barrett? I reckon they'd be able to rookie list him

So you can use them to match bids for Father sons and NGA players like the Camporeales
If one of the Camporales is picked as a late 2nd rounder by Adelaide, Carlton could use a 3rd rounder and 2 x 4ths to match it.
right now pick 36 and 50 is worth 775 points which = pick 25 (756) they could talk another club into giving up a pick in the 26-30 range

St Kilda traded out 27 for 32 & 45 and will try to use one of those picks to get in Macrae.
Freo after the Bolton deal will have 14, 30 and 67 so they might be interested in 36 and 50 for their pick 30.
Essendon with pick 28 might be interested in 36 & 50 for a slight points upgrade to use on their NGA prospect Kako.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was bid on so I don’t think he will get to the rookie draftwenchbarwer wrote:Jim05 wrote:I think you will keep 50 to use on Benny if a bid comes in around the 40 mark for himBooney wrote:We've lost Houston and next years first round pick.

Really, who knows what clubs want, Riley Grundy got drafted after all...
I've seen a bit of Barrett over the years, and he looks like he peaked at 16 and has plateaued since then. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Re: 2024 AFL Silly Season
Getting 29 to take on Atkins salary next year I’m fine with. Can’t complain as it swings in round abouts and we’ve been in the opposite position plenty of times where players have wanted to come to us. Obviously Houston had no intention in returning, I still don’t think North were in play for him even though would have been better deal for us. It is what it is, interested to see what our end draft hall looks like. I don’t think we will have 13 on draft night

He still has plenty of upside, didn't really show much until he was 14ish. Did a hamstring just before the state champs this year which is why he wasn't on show, he is small but has some AFL attributes - his speed and agility is elite.
IMO he is the best FS/NGA prospect Port have.

Which club needs or wants to get into the 1st round this year? Surely with that draft haul Richmond will be looking to swap a pick or two to spread their picks over next years draft as well.

As in the current crop for 2024? If so, it's a very shallow pool, more so a damp spot on the concrete
He fell off a bit in 2023, some of the SANFL U18 games I saw he was barely involved.
