Certainly learning to play in scrappy, low scoring games on substandard wickets is one option

Wandered past the square at Goodwood on the weekend (Sunday) and it didn't look promising with 6 days to round 1
Clubs spend countless thousands of dollars relaying pitch squares and on equipment, curators but it is all for nought if the pitches don't start the season in good condition. You're forever playing catch up trying to get an even covering of grass.
The cold, wet September has made things even more difficult than usual.
Grade cricket pitches have improved markedly over the last few years, partly because of centralised curating contracts but also because premier league has pushed the start date back a fortnight.

I'm sure all clubs could roll something out this week and play a game. The question is whether doing so would be detrimental to the square for the rest of the season. The reason why clubs have to re-lay squares and have whole seasons away from their home ground is partly because they don't get this.

No excuses for not having a pitch ready to go this week. I cannot see a week making much of a difference and I don't believe getting a pitch up for this week will have a detrimental impact on the square for the rest of the season. Most "squares" have 3, 4 or 5 pitches, so surely curators can find a strip with some grass on it? I had a look at the centre square at Rowe Park a few weeks back and it's never looked better ..... very even covering of grass across the entire square.

Every square is different. All get given back at different times from winter sports, all have different levels of traffic through winter, some have different number of pitches, some drain better than others.
If pitches have drained well and grass has already come through strong - great. Plenty of squares wouldn't be in that good condition though.
Ingle Farm was one of the clubs who had a pitch that bounced at ankle level when I was involved. Been 4-5 years since I've seen a game there admittedly so this may have changed.

Think that was the season they had the new square put in wasn't it? Terrible deck that year, incredibly low scores.
It's a pretty good wicket now though.

Centre square at Rowe Park was relaid in October 2011 and there were only a few A grade games played that season from late January. Average scores were around 150....hardly diabolical.

Terrible news.
We had a bloke in our B Grade on Saturday who last ball before the tea break got an inside edge straight onto the inside of his knee and managed to dislocate his knee straight out - delayed game for 90min waiting for the ambulance and spent something like 4hrs in hospital. Waiting on x-ray results to come back to find out if any further damage, but in the mean time lengthy stint on the sidelines and poor bloke is only casual at his job so no income!

I remember playing Woody Rech about ten years ago when one of their top order batsmen did his knee at the crease. Poor fella looked in all sorts of pain.
